Tristan in the red. Double meaning intended.

This is quite nicely poised.

Spez, Wilier and Orbea all have backup teams as insurance.

Top5 all still with a chance here, because this has all just been a warmup for tomorrow as the MOVING day

Stage 5 rules over the Absa Cape Epic with an iron fist. It is, without doubt, one of the biggest, meanest stages that the race has seen in years and the numbers alone tell a story of extreme distance, massive elevation, and relentless trials from Greyton to Stellenbosch.

The race leaves Greyton with its sights set on Botrivier. Once reached, KatPas stands guard of the Cape Floral Kingdom in Grabouw. Here, trails abound before the portage down the historic Gantouw Pass tests minds and legs alike. The descent will lull teams into a false sense of security, but all they need to do to remind themselves that they’re in the Absa Cape Epic is to cast their eyes across the Helderberg basin to the wall that is the Lourensford Nek. And then begin the grind to the top.

When over the Nek, a taste of what’s to come in the final two stages will cap off an epic day and guarantee a good night’s sleep for those who make it to the new race village intact.

oh, and there's some minor rain predicted overnight and early morning.

While the ladies seems like a 2 horse race, a mechanical for either of them and they are stuck out there to fix alone.

Enjoying the canyon boys throwing hammers around... They looked proper spent after the finished

Ja they really are racing from the heart. Enjoy their overall vibe, they seem to have a good rapport and are always ready with answers during post race interviews.

I cannot see Beers and Tristan catching up on lost time unless the other teams have their share of mechanicals and crashes. And it will be unfair of us to expect so much from Tristan so early in his career. It might have been different if he was Beer's partner from the outset so that they could train together for a year.

I would have matched Matt to Luke Moir but as you know with SPecialized, anything not Specialized is a major conflict of interest....

Rosa van Doorn and and Vera Looser out of the Cape Epic after Van Doorns crash where she sliced her knee open. Falling on shale is pretty knarly :(

I initially thought her reaction was very dramatic after he gotten easily back onto the bike but after ebike chick said it looked like she lost a tooth, she must've taken a serious knock to the head too.

Ouch 🤕

Yes. Luke is also not the corporate type of rider. He likes to do things his way.

Nah i think Tristan was the obvious choice locally. I rate him and pretzen as best marathon races behind beers. Also the podium last year would of given him the confidence too.

Its difficult to compare him to the steam strain of Beers. That effort in stage1 in bringing back that 4min gap was underrated. It may just come back to bite.

3 days to go. This is still wide open and hoping whatever happens that they are able to stand on top step on Sunday. 🇿🇦

Agreed.

I think what we're forgetting is just what Matt Beers has already achieved & that he's a top international rider.

To expect another local rider to be at the same level is a pretty big ask, we just don't have that depth of experience in the local scene. That's not to say Tristan won't get there, but give the guy a break, he's doing an awesome job they're second overall!

Tristan is only 24, barely out of U23!

He's doing far better than I expected.

I suggest Luke because they train together a lot the past year. and Luke has done well against Mat in races they have competed against each other. But, non Spaz, ...so.....

yip, knock out a tooth and chipped another plus the sliced knee. Her reaction made sense because tooth pain takes a while to register
