So my enlarged prostate needs to be scraped. 2 to 3 days in hospital, further 10 days off work and 4 to 6 weeks off the bike. I have heard that the recovery time is not a pleasant time and is rather painfully/uncomfortable. Is it that bad?

Hi WaynejG

Have not had the procedure but I am wondering if you experienced any kind of issues leading up to this decision and were you on any medication to manage the issues?

Hi.

Zero physical issues except for the occasional weak stream when urinating. There is a bit of a back story to this and a lesson for all men.

I am at the age where they recommend a annual PSA level blood test. I have been doing this since 2018. For some reason I skipped 2023 and 2024. Then on the Wild Dog dual purpose forum a guy had his PSA levels checked and they were off the chart high and he tested for cancer. Gave me a wake up call and last year I had my levels checked. Slightly elevated and above the accepted limit. Off to the urologist who did a scan and that other rather unpleasant thing they do. Turns out the scan showed my bladder not emptying properly and the prostate was enlarged.

So in I went for a biopsy to rule out cancer. Test results came back as negative for cancer. I was placed on a 6 month course of Uromax in the hope the swelling would go down. Needless to say the prostate is still enlarged and now it needs to be scraped as a bladder that does not empty properly can cause rather bad kidney issues.

So if you are over 50, learn the lesson and check those PSA levels annually.

I doubt doctors will be doing DRE much longer, it’s highly inaccurate and known for false negatives.

I used to be on Uromax for many years (yes years) and recently went back to the Urologist and he placed me onto Tadal.... something something but the pharmacist gave me the generic: Talvoir and this has sorted me out completely. Maybe try a month of this to see if it helps, mine started helping after the 2nd day

Hi Wayne, Please keep us posted. I guess that there a lot of us on this site who would be interested including my self. I am scheduled for July. Cheers

No problem will do. The procedure will be done in May. The urologist also cycles so he said lets do it in May when the weather is on the cold side so the 4-6 weeks off the bike won't be so bad.

I am also researching prostate friendly saddles. Apparently those that have the cut out in the middle are the ones to use. Did not help me much as I have been using that type of saddle for roughly 5 years.

Suppose if it will happen it will happen.

Depends how long your Urologists fingers are…

When I went for the initial appointment with the urologist, I had to pay R1200 for the appointment as my medical aid only kicks in for hospital expenses. After receiving the breakdown of the invoice I was left feeling somewhat used and cheap. R800 for the consult and R400 for the scan. That means the finger up the 0 was a freebie. No soft music, fine dining or chocolates...... 🤣

Suppose I should just be thankful he did not go with a second opinion and use two fingers 😂

No, you need to be thankful he did not have both hands on your shoulders 😂

Have a look at the SQLab range. Their saddles are specifically designed to unload the perineum and put the load through the sit bones.

So many of us have bloods drawn, for other reasons, often every 6 months. Once the needle is in, they might as well keep filling test viles ...

Every 6 months I add;

. Lipogram

. Total PSA (F1088)

. Vitamin B12

PS ...the othe 2 relates to potential risks due to my chronic conditions and meds ....  worth checking with your doctor which of that long list adds value to YOUR screening, over and above the bloods directly related to your primary diagnosis ....

PPS ... some interesting videos of the current research of the finger tio test ... it HAS its uses, but some are hinting this may become more a secondary test, only after other tests and symptoms

The reason I asked is I picked up a urinary tract infection twice and then my urologist did a flow check and diagnosed BPH, prescribed medication and subsequently I’ve not had a UTI again, he did also mention a “scrape” if the infections reoccur. TBH I’m not keen on taking the medication (Tamsulosin) everyday for the rest of my life, but I’m not keen on having it scraped either… the saying that getting old is not for sissies is so true….
