I did same, against traffic on grass, but didn't cross after the Shell, incident was basically 200m after the Shell.

I also ride this route often in both directions. Coming back I tend to ride on the grass in the opposite direction as you did, as it actually feels like the best option in terms of avoiding cars...but now its back to "would you rather..."

Where are CoCT and the WC gov in all of this?? No man, are they gonna wait until it is some high profile incident? Not that any of the other incidents are not high profile. Every life matters! I really want to move to the WC when I am groot but jeepers mense I think I'll stay put in GP.

Critical Mass!

Meet at Steenburg and Main. Ride across the entire lane/s.

Interrupt the taxi routes.  Shut them down!

Make SAPS take notice.  Mass Protest Action. It's the SA way...

I cycle to work occasionally (Hout Bay to Paarden Eiland), and have (sadly) avoided the dedicated cycle lane that runs alongside the bus lane, due the the Woodstock Bridge area/dangers, fortunately I have a harbour pass, which allows cycling through the greater basin area, and bypassing the 'danger' hot spot,

.....but I have occasionally taken the exact route where this mornings incident happened -

....I cannot NOW not help thinking that a SERIOUSLY-well policed return to the purpose-built cycle lanes, with proper, visible, paid security, would be the way to go...

A long shot, i know, but if that cycle lane was 100% 'trustworthy/safe', it would be an incredible resource.

I live in hope...

No chance, there are so many ways to get onto that cycle lane that it makes policing it impossible.

So i got a SANParks law enforcement ranger on my commute home now, on the mountain.

Apparently there was a lady that mugged yesterday by 2 black males, today her husband had gone out to the spot where she was robbed and got robbed by the same 2 guys.

The ranger had been out scouting and basically said he had gone into the quarry this morning he reckons at the time of the incident and the time he was informed these guys had been gone already

As a cycling community and please just asking(flame suit on)

What are the chances of hired security at hot spots? Legal requirements and possibilities etc.

I had spent about 10 minutes chatting to him i was alone as i am 90% of my commutes over the mountain... They are trying some things and he is fully aware...

This particular ranger sounded like and i got the feeling that he's really out there to make a difference, he mentioned to me about he's colleagues complaining about overtime as well as he's particular motorbike he was riding was given to him with an empty tank.

They are , like the neighborhood watch in my area is doing is profiling the guys, not these are law enforcement rangers so they are positively armed. So just ahead was 2 guys he had stopped taken photos of and shared with both Vredehoek and Walmer Estate neighborhood watch.

It was a positive conversation at the end of it. I'm hopeful... Commuting table mountain for just over 12 years now, and I'm not willing to give it up that easy
