It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Councillor Xolile Kalipa. Councillor Kalipa was fatally shot in Kayamandi on the night of Sunday, 4 May. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the South African Police Service.

Councillor Kalipa was a much-loved and deeply respected community leader. He served as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Democratic Alliance and was an active member of the Mayoral Committee, where he held the position of Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services. His contributions to the work of Council and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of residents will be remembered by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.

Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser expressed his profound shock and sorrow at the news, saying:
โ€œI am devastated by the loss of Councillor Kalipa. He was a dedicated public servant, a voice for the voiceless and a pillar of strength in his community. His passion for uplifting our people โ€“ especially the youth and women as part of his Community Services Portfolio โ€“ was evident in everything he did. We have not only lost a colleague, but a friend and a true champion for social development.โ€

We encourage everyone to keep Councillor Kalipaโ€™s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We also urge the public and media to respect their privacy as they mourn this tragic loss.

Councillor Kalipa will be dearly missed for his tireless work in community development and his steadfast representation of his constituents. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched.

May his soul rest in peace.

Due to age I have a vague recollection of a New York mayor ..Italian surname ? who cleaned up New York 2 decades ago over time by starting with the small thingsย

Ahhh ...........ย  Rudi Guiliani was the man if my memory is anything to go byย ๐Ÿ‘ด

I guess if you start threatening the public with THE FAMILY, violin cases or cement boots, you could achieve great successes.

There was another attempted mugging in Stellenbosch yesterday, this time on the R44 near the flats.

3 riders were confronted by 6 youngster armed with knifes. The woman in the group, riding 2nd wheel got knocked off her bike and they tried stealing the bike but she was still clipped in.
Fortunately a MOP stopped his car to assist and they ran off empty handed.

Happened around 12pm.

So now both roads out of Stellenbosch towards the North are risky ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Had my own run in yesterday afternoon past Cloetersville. Was around 14:00 ish, was coming up the R44 towards Blue Jay. When I spotted two guys at the white wall by Blue Jay. As soon as they spotted me one got up and started making his way across the road. I was eyeballing him while increasing my speed. There was a lot of traffic behind me and he could not cross the road fully. As the last car pasted him I was doing around 22km/h and he couldnโ€™t reach me. He did have half a brick in his hand and ready to try and knock me off.ย

I was lucky, I often cycle past there and never had any issues. I did warn another cyclist on his way down be on the lookout for the due.ย

Sadly it appears as if the pickings are now slim past Khayamnandi so they're moving over to the R44 ๐Ÿคฌ

Add Helshoogte and Stellies have become a dangerous place to cycle through.

Let's hold thumbs ....

ย

I have reached out to a security firm to keep an eye when in the area.ย  Helps that the owner is a cyclist ....

Anybody know of or work with security firms in the area, kindly do the same.

โ€ฆtalking of keeping an eye out in the areaโ€ฆ

โ€ฆmeant to post this comment LAST weekโ€ฆ

Wifey driving me home from work Wed late afternoon, and again i see a good police presence, meaning 2 policemen OUT of their van, right above the Salt River/ Woodstock Bridge homeless crew, and INTENSELY monitoring the situationโ€ฆ

โ€ฆanecdotal, but i really do feel security is much improved on the Woodstock/Salt River cycle laneโ€ฆ

โ€ฆlast week i commuted in, only to find my hard-to-get Harbour//Transnet pass, had expired, this was 06:30am, so i rather took my chances on the grass alongside the N1โ€ฆ

โ€ฆfond are my memories of MANY commutes (HB -P Eiland- HB), using an otherwise brilliant, smooth, well thought out traffic-free cycle lane; i hope to return to it someday.

Wish this was more consistent, but that was the ONLY day that they were there in the past 2 weeks.

Too inconsistent for me to feel that the situation is such that it;s safe to cycle there again.

From a cycling whatsapp group-

WARNING:
Hello all, friendly note to urge you all to never ย take the Bottelary route to Stellies. We were two people on a tandem, with many other cyclists passing us from both directions at 10am on a Sunday. There was heavy traffic on the road at that time as well. Six men walked into the road with very long knives. They stopped us and robbed us of our bike, garmins and phone. They were gone before anyone stopped to help. The Cloetesville police was amazing and managed to get our tandem back yesterday. This has been my fourth attack on a bike. There is nothing one can do...no use escalating the situation unless one is physically attacked. Ah, please make sure all the stuff on your bike is itemized on your Insurance...especially if you upgrade your garmin. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Thx for the heads-up @Reg Lizard. You'll have to be more specific with the location where this incident took place. The Bottelary route, per se, is quite safe and used by >100 cyclists each day.

My guess is that this went down in the Welgevonden/Khayemandi stretch on the R304, OR the Welgevonden/Cloetesville area on the R44, hence the interaction with Cloetesville SAPS.

Any more info would be helpful.

Sorry but unfortunately thats all I have. I also assumed that its the Kayamandi stretch that is referred to where the incident happened๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Yes it was at Kayamandi, about 100m before the last robot. As confirmed by the original poster in a whatsapp group discussion.
