The race organisers could quite easily track the number of people who have "collected" their number electronically. They would simply need a place on their website where you log in and press the "download race number" button and then you can print it out. It should be given as an option when signing up for a race that you want to either download or collect your race number. They could even offer you a R5 or R10 discount for downloading your race number (I know that is stretching it a bit!)

There is no reason once you have got your race number and seeding, you log onto the racetec website, go to events entered for you and have a link to download your race number.  The already have a link to photos for a race you entered.

Most know their seeding long before you get the sms, as racetec put it up there a couple of days before, so there is plenty of time to load on the system and make available for download.

Not really a problem. Do it like PPA. Evry one gets a fixed plastic number to use for the year with your start batch already printed on this number.

If you would like to be reseeded you need to apply for a reseeding and a new number would be send to you.

The morning of the race you get an event sticker at sign on and put this onto the back number.

Works well in CPT why cant it work in Gauteng.

Jip.

Works very well in the Cape.

Don't know why you're all complaining. I haven't raced with a number for the last few races. No one stops you and checks, and let's be honest, you know your batch and a number means very little. My chip is on the bike.

Had no problems since. And no wasting time to fetch cream samples and a piece of paper.

Sadly the race comms checks the licensed cats diligently.  So not an option.

The other favorite thing CSA complains about is that they want to see your license before giving you your number, but please, how difficult is it to link CSAs database to the race organizers database.

Why not make a place to enter your racing license number when entering, this checks your license status on the database and only then allows you to enter a racing category.

if they are really adamant about it, then make a sign on station for the start of each racing batch, the way it is done internationally.

I would agree wholeheartedly.

Also it would markedly reduce the cost of the race admin and entry fees as it would be automated in a piece of software. No need for a bunch of people sitting under Gazebos filing through stuff that has been printed out.

Ja, but sometimes those CSA tannies come walking through the licensed bunches at the start and some of them are pretty kwaai!

SA Seeding has their story jacked. I have my number board for life, and pay the license fee upon entry. All that remains is to collect the seeding batch sticker at registration on the morning of the event. No hassles.

PPA has, in spite of all the bitching an moaning about them, been able to get a lot of things right and it normally works. HOWEVER

All the BIG races with private organizers and those seem to be more GP, have their own agenda. Probably a marketing issue to sponsors. See how many people came and saw your banner / stand / hole in the ground.

So who knows if it will ever be sorted? We all know we normally just rush in, grab and go. But for the organizers it still represents people viewing the "ads" at the pickup point even if it is not really so in real life.

Marketing is a strange beast and marketing marketing even stranger.

Hi all, rather than complain, i would like to try and do something about it. My idea is to create an opportunity for somebody not currently employed to make a small amount money out of the inefficiency. There is not a lot of money to be made but i think it could come in handy to pay a few bills and help the cycling community out.

My idea would be to get somebody to do a bulk collection on behalf of hubbers, then arrange a meeting point on the day of the race (from 1 hour before first start time). R20-R30 per number. You sign a letter authorising them to collect your number and provide them a copy of your licence (if racing licence) or at least licence number if just a normal licence.

Please can you comment whether you would use this service consistently - if there is serious interest (i am hoping we can get 100 people on board), i will try help somebody take up the opportunity.

For a small fee like that, Yes I would. BUT I think the idea is to try work against the organisers and stop them from having this backward system. Don't get me wrong, Your idea is good and will definitely help a lot of guys out but then the organisers are winning because the numbers still get collected.

Until something gets done I would take you up on your offer.

Good idea.

And it has been done before.  Even by race organisers.

Problem is reliability.

I want to know I have everything in check the day before the race.

In the past numbers were not picked up.  Person did not have time of responsibility.  Couriers failed.  Organisers were difficult.

All issues.

One number.  One year.

Efficiency for my R500 license fee per year.

That would be great.

Spidey agree that is the ideal solution. But you have been saying this for 6 years and still no change. So i dont think we are going to get that anytime soon.

In terms of reliability would it help if the idea was improved (1) the person collects entries in second last day of collection so there is still a day to sort out if some kind of problem (2) you receive sms to confirm that your number has been collected (on say the thursday).
