Hi All,

What are the best mtb bottle cages from durability and efficiency perspective and obviously keeping the bottle in tough terrain - is carbon "better"? I have used Elite bottle cages and they seemed pretty descent

bottle cages are a dime a dozen dont waste your money on carbon, a carbon cage is like 5gram lighter than a plastic or alloy one. Try and get one that looks good on your bike, and preferably a rubber grip on the upper bend (but not required) a R40 cage works just as well as a R500 cage, its all about looks.

TACX bottlecages, I ride a FS with a 1 liter bottle and have never that is NEVER lost a bottle and I ride tokai downhills etc all the time. I wont trust anything else.

I sometimes ride support for AMARIDER at the mtb races in the Cape and it is shocking how many waterbottles are lost and left out on the trail. Over and above helping broken down riders and bikes, I also try to clean up as much rubbish as I can. On any rough bumpy downhill I pick up scores of bottles to carry to the finish. At big races like Boschendal, even a sizable backpack is not large enough to carry them all.

Make sure that bottle fits tightly in its cage. Bend the thing closed if you have to or add a bit of rubber to get it to hold the bottle tightly. And please, if you lose your bottle, stop and pick it up, especially if you are not racing for podium.

Just make sure the bottle fits the cage - otherwise any cage will loose bottles IMO

That is no maybe. These "Hollard/Momentum" bottles don't fit cages properly. The top clip of the cages don't reach the lips on the bottles so it does not go in properly. I tied a thin strip of tube over around the opening of my bottle cage so the cage can still expand but it grips the bottle better and the bit of extra rubber hold the bottle better.
