  1. I have one on my SS. Works fine, doesn't slip. What more needs to be said?
  2. UST tyres on Stan's rims?
  3. XT or SLX cranks. I have converted both to SS. Blackspire Monoveloce chainring. If you want really nice sprockets at a reasonable price, check outwww.velosolo.co.uk. They have Andel rear sprockets with the wide base in all flavours, spacer kits, tensioners, short bolts, you name it. Otherwise CRC. Chains are personal preference, but I run a SRAM 830 and have had no problems.
  4. I'll vouch for that. First time round, wife got pregnant within a month of stopping contraception. Unfortunately, was a blighted ovum, so no viable foetus. After the doc gave the go ahead to try again, wife got pregnant on the second or third try. My personal opinion is that the reason that it happened so quickly the second time round is that we refused to focus on the goal, but rather on the journey. I always joke that the cycling helped me get my wife pregnant twice in 6 months.
  5. Some more details on my new "lady": According to Sheldon Brown, she is a 1988 Bridgestone RB 1 Synergy, in Cobalt Blue. The other colourway in this model year was a red/white two tone. Chro Mo, she has been kicking around tandvleisboom for about 4 months. I found her on the second advert her previous owner posted. As far as I can ascertain, she is almost 100% original. Spec list is: Front Hub: Shimano 600 built with Wolber TX rim Rear Hub: Shimano 105 built with Wolber GTX rim Crankset: Shimano 105 with BioPace rings 52/42 Front deraillleur: Shimano 105 Rear derailleur: Shimano 105 6 speed Shifters: downtube Shimano 105 with STI for the rear derailleur Brakes: Shimano 105 with SLR Saddle: San Marco It needs new brake cables and the hubs and BB require a service. Does anybody know somewhere that I can get touchups done on the paintwork as the branding looks like its part of the paintwork and not decals?
  6. I am undecided on what approach I should take with my recent purchase of a 1988 Bridgestone RB-1 road bike. Do I strip it down, respray it (the original paintwork is a little ragged) and convert it to one gear? Or, do I attempt to restore it to its former glory? apart from the paintwork, it all seems to work fine, with the exception of some new rim tape required for the Wolber GTX and TX wheels.

  8. Jeebers! Looking at the responses on this thread, I'm clearly going to be there for the beer. Currently running 32x20 on the 29er and considering a 21 for Winterton.
  9. Kona have a number of steel framed bikes, easily obtainable through Maverick.

    THABA TRAILS

Its nothing like Rietvlei. Its more technical, rocky, and there is a lot more climbing to be done. Still, if you enjoy Rietvlei and can't help thinking that you want more, Thaba is the place to ride.
  11. Dammit!!!! I thought I was the only one thinking that.
  12. Schweeeet! Can't wait to get mine.
  13. I'm currently running a Black Panther as a rear tyre on my Anthem X. Good grip, predictable break away. Wears quite quickly compared to the Kenda I had previously. Lightish as tubeless.
  14. I have a wheelset built with the same rims. Personally, I have run 2.1 tyres on these rims, but I wouldn't run anything wider, as the tyre bead doesn't hook fully into the rim. I have rolled tyres off the rim (with tubes), so would say that 2.0 is the max width I would safely ride with.
  15. Marshal the Thaba Thoughee tomorrow morning, drink my way around SASSC tomorrow afternoon. Recovery ride and then appreciate my garden on Sunday.
  16. Oi! That was supposed to be my secret weapon for Saturday!
  17. OK, so I've finally got around to posting my new SS on this thread.
  18. Depends on your beer drinking skills. If you can stay on the singletrack after 2 milk stouts, you'll probably be OK.
  19. When are you planning to ride there? I'll be there at 7 on Saturday.
  20. The route is the same as the Thaba Thoughee route. I rode it on Saturday on a 32x19 and was broken by half way. The second half of the route has more steeps than the first half. Needless to say, I'm gearing up to a 20 rear cog and will try it again on Saturday.
  21. Bring your big boy pants. Rode the route on Saturday on SS and its tough!
  22. XT Shifters? Just take off the shift indicators and replace with the blanking plate. Much cleaner look on your bars. Then you can clean the shifter windows at your leisure.
  23. I used a 26" kit that I got at the 94.7 Expo, in my Loaded AMXC wheels. Worked like a charm, sealed without sealant and held air for two days.
  24. That turbo problem on the 1.9 tdi was largely due to the lack of adequate cooling of the intake temps at altitude. That make and model of turbo was fitted to the 1.9 tdi Golf 5, Polo 1.9 tdi (both the 74 and 96 kw versions) and the Seat Ibiza (96kw FR and 118kw Cupra). Of all those vehicles, all had the intercooler tucked under the front wing of the car with the exception of the Cupra, which had a front mounted intercooler, roughly twice the size of the other cooler. This accounted for the relatively few turbo failures on the Cupra as opposed to the other vehicles. I did 135 000 Kms in my Cupra, mostly spirited driving.
  25. Not all of us. I run 2.1 tyres on my rigid steel SS and my saddle of choice is a Selle Italia SLR XC Flow.
