  1. Third that...
  2. We run Crossmark NON UST foldables on the rear, and Schwalbe Rocket Ron Non-UST on the front. The Rocket Rons grip like the smelly stuff to a wool blanket on every type of terrain we have used them on. The Crossmarks seem to last forever, and we have never experienced a flat riding with either tyre. Non-UST are lighter than UST, and although the sidewalls are slightly thinner, have not given any problems. They also seat easier than UST tyres. The Crossmarks run true, with no problems of throwing the wheel out of true.
  3. The organisers can ask you to produce your licence. Doesn't happen often, but it does. Keep it with you, as I suspect you will feel like a dork when you can't produce it, and have to pay a day licence fee.
  4. I see there is a BIG billboard on the N1 South next to Makro Centurion advertising a ProBalance bracelet, available from Sportsmans Warehouse and some other shops. They state that it improves balance, power and flexibility. Perhaps they have finally managed to get the formulation right, and can guarantee their product. Anyone want to be a guinea pig and spend some hard earned cash to try them out?
  5. Normally the riders get a "sort-of" seeding at Babbas, in that the faster riders naturally gravitate to the front of the bunch. They are also mostly regulars, and know each other. At the normal starting line there is also enough room where riders can safely jocky for a position in safety during the neutral zone to further string out the bunch. Riding ethics is still important though. For that reason the commissaires repeat that the use of ipods and other devices is prohibited. Imagine trying to pass someone, while screaming "track" at them and they ignore you because they can't hear you. It happens all too often, with accidents happening as a result. A serious concern on the last race was riders ignoring pleas to keep as far left as possible, as the road is used by motor vehicles as well. Most of the drivers will slow down, and even yield to a bunch of cyclists. Not always though. A prime example occured just before the start. Retief (commissaire) asked riders to move off the tar road. At that time a SUV driven by an elderly gentleman came roaring past, ignoring signals from the marshals to slow down. The vehicle passed within a metre of the front cyclists, never slowing down, and the driver looking hell-bent on taking anyone out infront of him.
  6. We measured 34.2 yesterday with the Edge 500. The last couple of races last year all measured 35.3. I think the difference comes in with the different starting location. Yesterday all the riders started on the tar road, while the usual starting line is closer to the tents and finish line.
  7. According to news24 a MTB rider was injured in a fall in KZN early Saturday morning. We wish him a quick recovery. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Injured-biker-rescued-in-KZN-20110108
  8. CSA Membership for 2011, although pricey, was straight forward and easy. We have received confirmation that the membership and racing licence has been approved and is already on its way to the local club. We have also been able to download and print the membership card off their website. If it continues like this in the future, the membership fees are well spent.
  9. Jip, the Blue Moon Lodge was a scorcher. My Merc showed 46C on the road as well. Driving between Beufort West and Oudshoorn in December 2008 it showed 48C on the tar. When I first read the header of this topic I thought you wanted to know the HOTTEST someone has ever ridden, and I wanted to answer Scarlett Johansen and Megan Fox, but that would have been in my dreams....
  10. If it is the road I am thinking of, it starts at the R38 at the Barberton Private Hospital, and climbs to the Bulembo border post with Swaziland. The road also takes you to the Somgimvelo Nature Reserve, and should you continue travelling on the plantation road, you will pass the Shiyalongubu Dam, various goldmines, and finally rejoin the R38 again at Low's Creek. On the plantation road there used to be a road leading to the Eureka mine, where gold was discovered in the Lowveld in the late 1800's. A small area in the Somgimvelo Nature Reserve is the only spot left in the world where the Encephelartus Pauciendentatis (Barberton Cycad) grows wild. The entire Makonjwane mountain range used to have these rare cycads, but most of them were destroyed when afforestation took place, and the large plantations of mainly gum trees were planted.
  11. You could try and contact Garmin Distribution Africa at 011-2519999. If the unit was registered online locally they would have the details on record. Alternatively it could be registered on www.garmin.com, and GDA could once again possibly give assistance with the correct email addresses to send queries to. You would need the unit serial number which can be found on the unit body, and possibly the unit ID, by going to MENU, SETTINGS, About (type of unit) typically ABOUT EDGE.... Hope you can reunite the owner and his unit. I am copying your post over to Garmap.co.za, which is the local garmin forum.
  12. Unfortunately he will probably be tried as a minor (if he is caught, and the system actually works and he gets to court) and will then have his record (if convicted) expunged at the age of 18. If we could resort to mob justice I would be all for it, although we would then be lowering ourselves to his level. It would be satisfying though. A speedy recovery both physical and emotional to the lady cyclist, and well done to Anthony.
  13. Epic Sport in Doringkloof. THey have Podium, Alpine and Olimpcs.
  14. Crossmark foldable non-UST at the back, and Schwalbe Rocket Rons (again flodable non-UST) for the front have been doing thier thing for the past year, without any punctures, cuts or the like.
  15. The wheel sensor is to determine the size of the wheel you are using, and from there calculating the distance you have travelled. Remember that a GPS like the Edge 500 does not have any onboard maps, so it can't calculate where you are on a map. It takes your coordinates in relationship to the 4 satellites it has locked on. Using them, and using the circumferences of your tyre, it can work out what your speed it, how far you have travelled, and all the other goodies that you see on your unit. Once you have downloaded the raw data to a mapset using Mapsource, Garmin Connect or whatever your preferece is, you get a route on a map. I am referring this question to www.garmap.co.za for a more informed answer, and will revert.
  16. We seem to be off topic again. To get back to the topic, all that has to be said, is that it was expeceted from a blike driving a Polo. Polo drivers are the kids of the BMW drivers from a few years back...
  17. My rainguage has overflowed. I emptied it last night at about 18:30, and just after coming back from Babba's it is overflowing.
  18. Endola Enduros all the way. They fit better than any of the local bibs, are super comfy, the chamois lasts, there is no shifting, bunching or any of the other stuff people often complain about. No Sweat is about the best of the bargain basement stuff. Anatomics just don't do it for us...

    McD's

Another issue that I have with McDonalds is that in the past 10 years or so that they have been in the country, I have NEVER seen a white person behind the counter, in the kitchen or serving in the drive-thru. Racism?? Their food tastes like cr@p, their drinks are watered down, and their service sucks.
  20. We have started using them as well, and are really suprised by the price, service and attitude of the staff. Everyone is friendly, helpful and go out of their way to make the experience in the shop a pleasant one. Our new LBS as well from now on.
  21. I suggest you contact the blokes on the Garmin forum at GARMAP Choose the Forum tab at the bottom of the page, and post your question there. One of their members should be able to help you out in no time.
  22. Wish all of the above could be true, but the sad fact is that it can't. Not while the general population (the majority) are willing to sit back and moan and groan while actually doing nothing about it. We need to look after our own. Nobody wants to go through a bike-jacking, yet it happens all too often. Everyone of us on this forum has been either directly touched by this, or has a close friend that has suffered through this. It is time that we take the fight to the criminals, without breaking the law ourselves. They have more rights than we do in any case. Put pen to paper, write to newspapers, magazines, use radio talk shows and let the people see what is happening to us. While it is great that one of Nick Besters attackers got caught, the fact is that he was caught for trying to sell the stolen phone. Not because he was trying to sell the bike. Get to the root of the evil, and wipe it out there.
  23. You should not need to load USB drivers for your Garmin 305, as the PC should automatically pick it up. You might not be able to load files from the device directly to Garmin Connect, as the file types may differ. Try and save the file as a .gpx file, and then send that to Garmin Connect. You can also try and get access to Mapsource, the Garmin mapping software that enables you to view Garmin maps on your PC. Once you have saved a ride details as a .gpx file, it is a very handy program to plot your ride on the map, and you can also make profiles of the ride. I use a roundabout method to get ride details onto the PC. I first use Training Centre to retreive the ride/file from the device. Then the file gets exported to a folder on my PC, saving the file as a .gpx file. Open the .gpx file in Mapsource. Once the file is open in Mapsource, it can be transferred to google earth, for a satellite image of the route. A profile view of the route can also be created.
  24. Very well done. The conditions were not altogether perfect, so you can expect to do even better with your next race. Hopefully the next race will not have as much wind, it won't be quite as hot, and you will get a better goodie bag than those handed out at Crater Cruise. I think this was probably the worst goodie bag we have ever received. Junk Mail, some flyers, chamois butter and some lux samples (again.) Maybe they should start handing out goody bags with men in mind.

    Shaving Legs

Where to stop? About at the spot where you start cringing when you slowly walk into a swimming pool with cold water. Or just above that. Or where your tan line starts from the bib shorts.... Personal preference I think.
