  1. Back to the discussion of going to interviews when there on a visitors visa - a mate warned me last night of carrying anything on me that may suggest I am looking for a job as customs could hoof you. I checked my visa conditions and it simply states I cannot work.

I am there on a recce mission and holiday primarily and would simply want a meet and greet with some of the recruitment agencies and maybe a bank or two HR dept just so they know I am serious and can put a face to a name. I most certainly do not want to start working whilst there.

It seems to be accepted that you can interview whilst on a visitor visa but is it worth the risk of carrying a cv, job spec etc with you in case you get that overly zealous immigration officer - would it be safer to print once that side through customs or is it a non event?

The immigration agent I used suggested that I include a statement along the lines of:

"I plan to visit some friends and do some sightseeing while evaluating the suitability of New Zealand as a country for me and my family to live in."

    in my visa application itinerary.

That way you make your intensions clear.

  2. I hate it when cars overtake and then turn left.

Glad you and bike were both OK enough to chase her down.

    You OK now?

That sucks, glad you didn't sustain any major injuries. The face on tar leaves some ugly rashes, we should compare face pics  :D

    All good. Thank you.

    Stay safe!

  3. I had a crazy fall this morning.

I was in the bike lane going straight, motorist passed me on the right and proceeded to turn left. Wet road plus breaking heavily plus swerving and I went over the handlebars, face to the tar.

Luckily I could get up and chase down the car in the traffic. She did not see me - 3 flashing rear lights, one flashing front, a safety vest and reflective strips on bike and helmet was not enough.

This was my first real incident in almost 2 years of commuting. Got some scars to remind me to always stay alert and not assume they will see you.

  4. Have any of you noticed how much broken glass we have on the streets of Auckland (North Shore)? I commute to work by bicycle on most days and it is ridiculous how much glass there is on the road - mostly beer bottles. They sweep the roads often, but it does not seem to help.

The broken glass is the one bad thing that I did not expect.

I do not understand why people feel the need to litter.

  5. PostNet CBD https://www.facebook.com/postnetptacbd

We had the completed forms, scanned it and mailed to PostNet. They sorted the rest.

We've (well our agent) has put in our EOI.

They have said to us tho that we should get new police clearances as if anything gets delayed, our clearances will expire while the ITA is being processed.

How best to get SA Police clearances from here?  Fingerprints at post shop then courier those with certified copy of passport to someone in SA who can drop off / pick up from police station or police clearance place in SA?

  6. Golden rule - think for everyone else.

Glad it wasn't too bad - get better soon!

Got knocked off the bike today by a school mom that didn’t look. Just drove me onto the pavement.

I didn’t see you she said. Luckily I saw her pull across the road and thought she may not see me so scrubbed off speed. Sore wrist and scratches on the Dale. Carbon braking is not the best in an emergency.

  7. Question for our Kiwi friends. (or anyone living abroad i suppose)

How did you go about getting a job on the other side?

Did you apply from South Africa and interview remotely? Do you work for a international co and they help you move across? Sell everything in SA and just move and hope it works out there?

I found that I had to come here to get interviews and find a job - and even then the employers was sceptical about my commitment to move.

I maybe had 2 skype interviews over a 6 month period that came to nothing. Once here it was a lot easier and had a job by the end of the first week.

  8. She wrote it again on 12 May. Still waiting for the results but she does not feel very positive - and that after studying very hard for it. Too little time seems to be the biggest issue.

Has she written again and got a 7 for writing?

It seems like that one is the most difficult to pass here, of the time my sis got a 6.5 for it only 2 people that wrote on that day got 7's (nothing higher).

  9. My wife had to do the academic IELTS for nursing registration, also requiring 7 or higher in every section.

She passed well with average above 7, but 6.5 for the writing - so she has to do it all again. Looks like the academic writing is quite difficult.

Correct, I don't need it for residency application, and luckily my partner is a PR already (hence the reason why we can register the little one as a NZ citizen at birth), but I will need it to do my LAT (Limited Authority to Teach) registration. They unfortunately only accept 4 tests, the Parsons isn't one of them. To register at the education council one needs to get a 7 in each section of the IELTS test (not as an overall). This seems like a big mountain to climb, as my sister wrote a couple of weekends ago and got 7.5 overall, but on 2 separate sections got 6.5 so she cant submit her education registration yet (although she already has a job offer).

It is overall such a long process too (just to write the test), because you have to complete registration at least a week before the test date, then after the test date they take 2 weeks to give the results, so the quickest turn around time just to know if you passed is 3 weeks. That's longer than her Registration at the council will take and probably longer than her work visa too.

  10. Ok so finally taking the big step!!Flying in Mid Febr to Auckland to come do some job hunting. Have 1 or 2 contacts that side but still need to setup some more appointments.

Hold thumbs!!! Took us like forever to make up our minds but now fully committed to make it work.

Any advice on good recruiting agencies that specialize in the IT sector?

    I used www.enterprise.co.nz

It took them a while to respond to my enquiries but became very helpful when they heard that I had my job seeking ticket booked - I guess they had too many no-shows in the past.

  11. I have been following this thread for a long time. Some very good information on here. I appreciate the honest opinions many of you have shared.

At last, I have my visitors visa approved and will be coming to Auckland at the end of July on a job finding mission - C# Developer.

I am extremely excited - hopefully, I will join the many happy ex-South Africans in New Zealand before the end of the year.
