  1. The facts are that the Spruit is by far the busiest MTB trail in SA - mostly because it runs right through the middle of some of Joburg's leafy suburbs and it's free. Besides us MTBers, this greenbelt is shared by runners, walkers, dog walkers, horse riders, commuters and the occasional idiot motorcyclist. That's a whole lot of people from the most varied cultures and backgrounds being brought together. no other trail has this. The reason why it hasn't descended into complete chaos is because, just like our roads, business, schools etc, it's a small minority in all aspects of life who believe they are superior. They are the idiots. You have to learn to deal with them. Unfortunately even on a weekend when you are participating in your favourite recreational sport. It's quite rare for the idiots to resort to physical violence, but just like on our roads, trail rage does happen. That's why the Spruit Rats favour flat shoes. It is easier to land on ones feet after being pushed or hit. And provides much better purchase for your footing when defending yourself. Besides that the Rats tend to steer clear of the well worn main pathways wherever possible, rather frolicking on the unidirectional small to medium sized jumps off the main trailway.
  2. Great thread. and this is the thought process I got through with people who I help buy bikes. In my experience the guys who do open their minds to a different way of thinking by buying slacker geo and longer travel end up with a faster progression to a higher skill level. I will never go back to XC since buying my first Trail bike about 7 years ago - even though I do get opportunity to test ride lots of different bikes. Even my hardtail is made for a squishy 140mm up front. Edit: bad granma
  3. They look pretty cool. Looks like they may be sketchy in the transition between bike upright and leant over though. Not a problem if you know how to adjust your riding.
  4. I think certain sizes sold out at International Trade pretty quickly. You could call Jason to enquire.
  5. Ja, normal price around R1k.
  6. I happily pay that small amount to cover the excess. Which good doctors in private practise only charge MA rates? It also covers other associated costs that the MA doesn't pick up.
  7. Cool! Maybe you can showcase the fun sections of the Spruit
  8. Feel the same way about my Intense 5.5
  9. Sorry to hear man. I know the feeling as the same happened to me at Groenkloof. Lost about R5k of stuff. I started by replacing my Mule with a Dakine Nomad and because that was such an upgrade, decided not to skimp and got Birzman tools, pump etc. the only thing I haven't replaced yet is the Leatherman.
  10. When you say curved are you referring to the backsweep? Because you do get proper curved bars used by some hardcore single speeders.
  11. I own a handful of them.
  12. Yeah, my Juicy's are great brakes as are the new Shimano products but once I swopped over to Hope...
  13. We have been working at Hakahana, building new trail and creating some technical obstacles which I reckon are beyond the capabilities of most riders. All these very tech areas will be well marked and we obviously have to build B and in some cases even C lines to cater for all skill levels. But we need to cater for experienced and skilled riders, even obstacles that will challenge good riders. PS. You will be surprised what you can ride if you drop your saddle down and out of the way, even with a xc bike.
  14. I suppose I do get discount at Thule and you know it's all fitted 100% correctly.
  15. Yip, the only place I go if I need a Thule.
  16. Nice one Peach! I gather it will be some trail side footage for a bit?
  17. What made it worse was that the helicopter decided to follow me quite closely. I think because I was out of position amongst the back markers - so it looked like I was really fast - and I was wearing an orange helmet with bright green shirt. Every time I caught someone I shouted like crazy but they still couldn't hear me. Had to make some risky passing moves. Haha. Result was 5 seconds of footage of me on SSport coverage rather than one of the top guys. 3:13
  18. For Giba? At KK, the timer gave me a minute.
  19. Depends which timing system they use. At the recent Karkloof Enduro I was told we couldn't have more than a minute gap which resulted in me catching 4 guys on the way down 'Bat Outta Hell'. This was only an issue on that first stage though as the field spreads out and queues are less for subsequent stages. At previous races at Cascades with a different timing system we could go whenever we wanted.
  20. Yeah, you have to decide if you want a marathon bike or a trail bike. The only way is to ride both. I'm sure there are some Hubbers in kzn who could help you out with a test ride and even some personal advice. Just think about the fact that you stay in trailbike heaven.
  21. And in a position that won't wash away like the last two.
  22. From the looks of it you won't have much clearance either way. Take V12man's advice.
  23. That's why we do Enduros.
  24. Why not just get a spare hanger?
