  1. Quick question to those of you that have built up bikes: is it worth buying a frame (i.e. Farr) then all the bits separately and building up the bike? Worth it in terms of cost: of course the drivetrain alone will come close to matching the cost of the frame; then add wheels ($$)and all the other bits ...

It’s more expensive, unless you buy on sale, but well worth it. You end up with exactly what you want

  2. Fork service wasn't that expensive afterall. I desided to keep the dust wipers and only replace the foam rings. The bike shop said that with my type of fork it isn't necessary to service the damper because it's a sealed cartridge damper and dust cant get in (but isn't it not the same with all shocks?)

    Lower leg.... R300

    Fork service.... R550

I was charged R300. I don't think they charged me for the foam rings. Next year Ill get myself new seals then it will cost 600+-

I order seal kits on ebay. Costs R300 for 2 full rebuild kits for my Pike. Oil was another R100 and a tub of sram butter another R180. Labour is free since I do it myself (it's not exactly rocket science, you just need a clean environment to work in). So for under R1k I get 2 full rebuilds with all seals, wipers, o-rings, etc. and enough old to do a change every 6 months. Basically buys me 5 years of riding the fork.

  3. A mate of mine rents his Tesla on there. He reckons 33% of the premium goes to insurance. The company deducts it and fully coveres the replacement value of the vehicle.

Double insured then, unless you specifically notify your private insurer. It could get all kinds of messy, particularly on bank financed vehicles. Especially when a claim is made and pre-existing damage is identified - which policy should cover it?

  4. Kroger - the US's largest 'traditional' grocer with just over 3000 stores is also rolling out store-brand plant-based 'meatless' alternatives. One - they don't want to get left behind, two - they need to reinvigorate their brand.

    It keeps growing...

Based on the pricing of 'vegan friendly' branded items, this is simply a move to higher margins for many retailers and manufacturers. Of course it will be branded as becoming sustainable and animal friendly, because that's what sells product.

  5. Pretty much a predictable outcome for the route. Not too excited about this one. It seems to get easier every year since 2008

No, it does not! It get's harder and harder and it's the pinnacle of mtb in south africa the world the whole universe and only the best of the best of the best sponsored pros with matching absa kit are allowed the absolute privilege of even attempting it!! You wouldn't know because you're a loser and have never even finished it or maybe you have I don't actually know but I can't be bothered to find out because I'm busy gargling the epic Kool-Aid so hard right now!!!

I've got every route map and my amazing top 250GC finishing times tattoo'd on my massive calves, so I know EVERYTHING about the epic, bro.

  6. “LOL, the best of the best?“

Sauser - olympic champ world champ

Nino - olympic champ world champ

Rissveds - olympic champ world champ

    List goes on and ...

Literally, and read carefully, I MEAN LITERALLY, every top South African Pro competes there. So gan praat k*k op n ane plek asb

How many of them were paid to be there, as a marketing drawcard? What about the other 1300 riders? Are they the best of the best of the weekend warrior pros?   Sponsored entry fees, matching kit and a clever team name doesn't make you a pro. Even if you manage a top 500 finish...

  7. The Epic is now a world class event where the best of the best -Amateurs and Professionals alike come together. It has evolved into something beyond most and any one and I mean anyone who has ridden this year respects the race, why, cause its such a massive privilege to be there.

LOL, the best of the best? There are some pro's there, but The Epic has largely become a marketing platform for ex-professional sportsmen, corporate sponsored 'execs', and folks with R100k to spend on a week of riding.

You do appear to have drunk heavily from the epic koolaid.

  8. How is the work culture compared to SA?

I read on the NZ sites they “just get on with it”

Might be controversial here but although people say Saffers work hard... I have always found people around me in corporate to be mostly just doing what they need to. This has always enabled me to stand out a bit.

Im going with the attitude of showing my value. Work hard but still maintain life balance. Also going to learn as much as i can from the people.

Told my wife if we do this, go dont go half in. We go full in soaking it all up.

I always chuckle at the 'saffas work hard' opinion. I'm my experience, they generally don't work any harder than other people. Background and ethnicity of people here is far wider than I experienced in SA, so no particular group of people really stands out. Culture is very much dependent on the specific organisation, but I've found people to be far more professional and take their jobs quite seriously, than in SA. I worked for 10+ organisations in SA and every single one of them had a fair amount of 'dead wood' floating around - people that just collect a pay check and manage to fly below the radar. I haven't experienced that at all in Australia so far.

  9. The idea behind being a vegetarian or vegan is great. The constant bashing of opinion is not.

To illustrate this point, next time a Jehovas witness comes around, invite them in, have a chat and really listen to what they have to say.

The above point can be rehashed with almost any religion, or strong beliefs.

So while the author was saying its possible to not hate vegans pushing their agenda, Im saying, its possible to be a vegan without being a dick.

Heck Im fairly sure in the 5 odd years my brother has been vegan that he hasnt told anyone who didnt ask.

He's a petty shoddy vegan if he isn't spreading the gospel, um, message to everyone around him.

    Happy Friday!

  10. It just dawned on me that you used the term "salties". Well done, you are well on the way to becoming a local !

Have you cracked the other Australian colloquilism code: chop the words in half and end it with an "O". Servo, ambo, no probo etc....

LOL, I was just commenting on this at work this morning. Shortly before a preso :)

Regarding the snakes, I've seen a few in my 5 months here, all pythons. But I do spend a fair amount of time in the forest.

  11. Believe me it is tempting. Can't really swim in the sea there though. Or walk around without some f#cking monstrous thing trying to kill you!

No, that's way up north. The sea around brisbane doesn't have salties or box jelly fish. Climate wise it's similar to living in kzn here. A bit colder in winter for sure, and a bit warmer in summer. You get a few snakes but most warm places do. Not really an everyday issue though.

  12. If you can post some of these I'm genuinely interested, as I've said before it was the health aspect that initially got me heading in this vegan direction. I'm honestly trying to think back but I have only come across the opposite.

(I'll look up the saturated fat thing you mention, I love an MCG-like debunk)

It's all on page 1 of this very thread ;) Nothing new, any exclusionary diet is bad for you. Consuming anything in excess is bad for you. Eat a balanced diet, live a balanced life.
