  1. The Momsen LA651 is a women’s specific 650b hardtail. Retailing at just over R7,000 it falls firmly in the entry-level category, however it might be just the ticket to encourage you or your partner to fall in love with biking, without making the huge financial commitment required by a higher specced model. 2. between these two bikes which has the best components, for easy gear changes, and good shocks and breaks?
  3. Hi I am a newby to mountain biking and needed some advice on 2 bikes. I have an option between the Momsen al329 and the Momsen Soft al. I wanted to hear which is the better option to choose from as I can get them both at the same price. Thanks!!
  4. On Wednesday night Two Wheels Trading launched their 2016 product range at a dealer event in Johannesburg. The all-new Momsen VIPA Team issue and XT were among the items on display. Although we've already taken a first look at the Vipa XT on screen, we hadn't yet seen it in the flesh, nor had we seen the new colour way for the Team issue spec. Click here to view the article
  5. Hi all, I'm new to the forum, and MTB in general. I'm looking at getting myself a MTB and I have the option of a 2nd hand Momsen AL-229 from 2014, or a new Titan Sport 2016. I'm not clued up on the components, and what's good and whats average - but I'd like this bike to treat me well up until I'm really into it and can afford either upgrading it, or a new bike. Whats the opinions? I'm leaning towards the Titan as its new and hasn't been abused. The Momsen is this one listed here: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/148829-momsen-229-medium/ Thanks
  6. Hi Guys, I'm looking at getting into MTbing, particularly like the idea of stage races (W2W, Sani etc.,). Any advice regarding the following bikes would be greatly appreciated: 1. Momsen Vipa AC 2. Giant Anthem 3. Scott Spark 940 Thanks
  7. I saw this new Releigh full sus on Bikerumour.com that looks like a Vipa: Did Raleigh "Chinese copy" Momsen? Was Momsen selling a generic design, that Raleigh now also started selling? Is Raleigh buying them from Momsen? Or perhaps it`s similar, but not the same thing? http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/04/23/soc15-raleigh-adds-more-carbon-thru-axles-and-light-weight-rx-womens-elite-cross-bike/#more-100244 http://brimages.bikeboardmedia.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Raleigh-bikes-sea-otter-rx-roker-skarn-carbon-4-600x400.jpg
  8. Hi guys, So my frame recently got damaged and I'm hoping to get insurance to replace the frame. I am currently riding a Momsen SL729, which they don't make anymore. I therefore can basically choose any hardtail frame to replace it with...I would like your suggestions on some great frames? P.S. saw this, what you think? http://www.evobikes.co.za/framesets/flu-x-29er.html Thanks Quintin
  9. Hi all Outta shape newbie here. Trying to motivate myself to get into shape and the last time I rode a bike was in my junior years...hope I still got a sense of balance. So popped into a bike shop the other day and dealer recommended locally made Momsen Vipa AC that is within my budget. So yea, was going to splurge a little here and spoil myself. Have a few friends that ride around in our estate in the morning daily so that hopefully will motivate me to join them on their daily crusade. For the price of the Vipa AC which is not a full carbon bike - just has the rear triangle that is carbon, do you guys think the price is justified? A friend of mine says can get a full carbon bike for retail under R30k. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. DC
  10. Swedish National Cross Country Champion and World Cup Cross Country contender, Emil Lindgren, joined Kargo Pro MTB in November. He recently arrived in South Africa for the first SA Cup XCO event and this coming Sunday (15 March 2015) kick of his fourth Cape Epic partnering with Brendon Davids. We caught up with Emil at the Lifecycle Expo to talk about racing in South Africa, the Cape Epic, bikes and the growth of the sport. Click here to view the article
  11. I am the proud new owner of a Momsen Vipa. Started building it last night, but hit a snag or two so will only be completed around lunch today. For now build kit looks like this: Size:...........Large Fork:..........RockShox SID XX 100mm, 15mm TA Shock:.......Fox CTD (Stock) Wheelset:..American Classic Tubeless Handlebar: Race Face SixC 725mm Stem:.........Sunline 50mm Brakes:......Avid Elixer Grips:........ODI Groupset...SRAM X0 2x10 Seatpost:...Truvativ Noir Saddle:.....Selle Italia SLR Tires:........Schwalbe Rocket Ron / Racing Ralph TLR Pedals:......XT Trail Weight:.....? Build is a bit of a morph between carry over and what I had in the parts bin. Planned changes 1. Not so sure about the white fork. Will wait and see what it looks like when all is done. Might even go 120mm after this. Will add some playfulness to what will be a XC rocket. 2. Once I do fitment the 50mm stem will go. Will replace with correct length Momsen 3. Again, fitment might see the SixC bar go. To be (most likely) replaced by Momsen Up/Down bar Was nice to see frame comes frame protection and how to guide of what goes where. Not the usual stock stuff either. Sized and pre-cut already. Nice touch. Graphics have been changed slightly from pre-production "Epic" model. Looks even better now. TT graphics are more subtle with only Patrick Morewood's signature on there. Rest of the bike is a study in attention to detail. Thanks again to my LBS Cycle Factory who's building the bike with the love and care it deserves! Frame was delivered at the shop yesterday and they're doing their best to get it ride-rady in time for me to take it on leave with me this afternoon. Big up to them. My (close to) favourite little detail on the frame? Internal routing for a Stealth Dropper! Yes, I will be the guy on the XC start line with flat pedals and a dropper post on my 29er race bike! 12. What feels like an eternity is finally coming to a close: My Momsen STR29 Single speed is ready to ride in all it's Gulf Oil racing colors glory. Looking back at all the installments and browsing through the pictures I've taken along the way it's hard to believe where it all started and where we are now. Click here to view the article
  13. Kargo Pro MTB is relishing the start of an exciting 2015 mountain biking season and the country’s only UCI Trade Team’s frantic start to the new year has been further bolstered by the confirmation that recent international signing, world number nine Emil Lindgren will join the outfit in sunny South Africa for a full seven weeks. 14. Hey guys! My wife and I want to start doing Mtb'ing. We live in the Sandveld, about 50km from Clanwilliam. Around here there are dirt and gravel roads and maybe we'll go to the Cedarberg once in a while. Main idea is to get fit and stay in shape. I've done a bit of research already, but at the moment I'm still not sure whether I should rather go for a well spec'd 26er vs the bigger wheels with lower specs. Keep in mind the budget at the moment is about R15k for both bikes and I'm 1,71m tall and my wife around 1,65m. I would prefer R8-9k for my bikes and R6-7k for wife's bike. She doesn't REALLY care, as long as "it's pretty".... you know haha! Here is what I found so far: 26" 2013 Scott Aspect 610 26er for R7500 - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/aspect-610-2013-mountain-bike-ec042353 2013 GT Zaskar Elite 26er for R9350 - http://www.gtbicycles.com/int/2013/bikes/mountain/xc/zaskar-elite 29" 2013 Momsen AL 329 for R8500 - http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/momsen-al329-2013?quicktabs_1=1#quicktabs-1 2013 Silverback Vida 2 for R10 000 - http://www.bicycling.co.za/bike-buyers-guide/vida-2-29er/ WIFE Titan 650B Sport - http://www.cyclefactory.co.za/index.php/bikes/27-5-mtb/titan-calyp-650b-sport-detail Giant Tempt 4 - http://www.cyclefactory.co.za/index.php/bikes/27-5-mtb/giant-tempt-275-4-detail Silverback Splash 1 http://www.silverbacklab.com/upload/2011_website_SILVERBACK/splash1_14.htm Momsen LA 651 650b - http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/momsen-650b-la651-2014 This is what I've got so far in my price range.... The rest all seem to have Alivio/Acera/Deore components and I'm allergic to buy anything to replace it in the near future. I would actually prefer a 27,5" but I don't seem to find anything that's worth looking at in my price range for that size. ANY other suggestions welcome! Also any critique and advise! I appreciate your input guys!

  16. I am finalising a build for a Momsen hardtail, I am considering the following headset for the bike "Hope Tapered Integral ZS44 - ZS56 Headset (1.1/8 - 1.5 tapered)". I am going to purchase through chain reaction so don't want to get it wrong. TWT suggest the following size "semi-integrated 44/55 headset" but I can't seem to find the same sizing anywhere - I am assuming that Momsen uses a standard 1.1/8-1.5 tapered steerer tube but would like some confirmation. If you ask why a Hope headset - the aim is to put decent components on and build a lightweight steed. If anyone has experience with the headset which TWT (Two Wheels Trading) offer and can offer comparative advice it would be appreciated Thanks for your input & advice Jean-Pierre
  17. This is my first post on The Hub..so hello everyone I am in the process of shopping for a new 29" hardtail in the 15-20k price range. Based on searches in the forums, web reviews and spec-by-spec comparisons I've narrowed down my options to the following: 2014 Merida Big.Nine 1500 2015 Momsen AL429 2014 Momsen AL529 The Al529 seems to no longer be an option as most retailers I've spoken to are unable to order 2014 momsens. (probably due to the 2015 range coming in next week) So it's down to the Al429 and the Big nine 1500. Either one will cost roughly R18,000. I am struggling to decide between the specs. The Merida ships with a mid to top range fox fork (Fox 32 Float 29 Evo 100) whereas the Momsen ships with an entry-level Rockshox fork (30 gold) However the momsen does have an XT rear derailleur as well as Stan's ZTR rapid rims which I have heard are quite good. I've also read many positive reviews and a generally favourable sentiment amongst Hub users for Momsen bikes. (not to mention that they are a local brand) So which one would you recommend? I am not too clued up on compontents and their various pros and cons. Basically what I am looking for is a decent, value for money hardtail that can take a beating. Alternative brand/bike suggestions are also welcome I appreciate your feedback!
  18. Morning Hubbers. Especially Stellenbosch and surrounds. Please be on the look out for my stolen Momsen SL929. Couple of unique features to make it very easy to stand out. 1. Powertap oversized rear hub. (Thru axle). - Very few mtb's riding around with these. Even fewer on 142+ thru axle bikes. Built on ZTR Crest rim. 2. ZTR Crest front wheel with tied & soldered spokes. Stickers quite faded from the sun and washing. - Again something you don't see very often. 3. Carbon Fizik Antares saddle with red details and carbon rails. (Some scuff marks on the sides). 4. Very narrow and well worn Easton EA90 carbon h/bar. 5. 2013 Sani2C bracelet on h/bar. Bike is not insured so offering a R5000 reward if complete bike is returned. Thanks Francois
  19. Any opinions on these 2 bikes? I like the lockout on the Scott but the Vipa looks so hot. What else should I look at at the R40k mark?
  20. South Africa’s the leader in MTB stage races, but it is also adopting enduro racing with fervour. Fast catching on around South Africa, this discipline attracts a new breed of rider: from XCO and DH. Does that mean you need another bike in your garage? We’d say yes (as you can never have too many), but the bank manager might having something to say about that… Click here to view the article
  21. I'm sure there're dozen of similar threads in here... but if you've got yhe time and feel like adding your input I'd appreciate it. After 3 years of EXCELLENT service from my converted Scott Aspect SS, I've decided I think I deserve a 29'er SS Specific bike. I've more than likely decided on a Momsen STR and I was going to go with very basic but durable parts to build... basic Handle bar, seat post , stem etc Deore Crank Magic rims Surly cogs and chain rings to name a few But .... then i got thinking ... maybe I should pimp it... but just a bit, without breaking the bank! I'm trying to get away with around mid to high teens thousands (but would like it to hopefully be sub 20) on the build. If you were doing this , what would you do?
  22. My previous installment on this build ended with the Momsen STR29 receiving it's first coat of Gulf orange. At that stage I was still looking for a fork and after holding out for a rigid carbon fork I decided to pull the trigger on a steel fork from Grant Usher. Click here to view the article
  23. Hey guys Liezel van der Westhuizen's Ltd Edition Momsen was stolen yesterday, please keep an eye out!
  24. Hoping to tap into the combined wisdom of all the Hubbers out there. I've recently bought a Momsen STR 29 steel 29er frame and transferred most of the components from my outgoing Silverback Segma 29er onto the new frame. The original Shimano front mech (model: fd-m770-10) worked perfectly on the old bike, but the cage seems too long for the new frame. It is not possible to position the mech at the recommended minimum spacing over the big ring, without the bottom of the cage interfering on the chain stay. See image: At the moment shifting performance is the best at this high position, but not very good at all. The chain often hunts when moving from the middle to the big ring. Adjusting the chain tension helps a little. I run a 24/32/42 chain wheel and 10 speed 11-34 casette. The seat tube is 28.6mm and the angle between the seat tube and chain stay is 73 degrees and requires a bottom pull setup. What replacement Shimano mech will work here? Thanks for your advice in advance
