Closest I have experienced was about 25-30 meters. Ligthing struck a palm tree in our garden at 3.00 am in the morning oh and then the lapa burnt down. Still had to do a system demo to the defence force and my eyes could not focus properly on anything as there was still ash in my eyes.

We have one of those red and white telkom communication towers right behind our house, it is often hit.

But normally I’m inside so no big deal, but the one day I was outside, when you hear the bang and see the flash at exactly the same time it makes you jump, like really high.

You know the lightning strike was  close to home when your earth leakage trips (apart from the instantaneous flash bang)

I grew up in a house on one of the quartzite ridges around Joburg. A close strike was when it blew up the Telkom phone.

The Berg is notorious for serious storms in summer. As a rule we generally did not do the high berg in summer and rather kept to the kloofs like Didema Gorge.Winter is the time for the high berg

did a hike in the berg many years ago. Slept in a cave the one night and a thunderstorm hit. We were in the middle of those lightning strikes. Jeez it was loud. Think the hike was Bell Peak area? Not sure if that name is right.
