I can only imagine. SAA have a very good safety record (despite the current mis-management issues) and I know a few SAA staff who at the time of the Helderberg going down were truly shaken to the core. They knew flight staff who were on that plane too.

Yeah SAA was so much smaller back then that just about everyone knew or had met everyone else in the company. I was only 3 but my toppie already had a few years service with the airline. Mickey Mitchell was a family friend of my grand parents and lived a few houses down from them. He, Mickey, had also apparently been given some info. My Dad and Grandfather tell me stories of how the cops spent days at the house. I think by now, everyone that knew something has passed away. Or maybe not.............

A vital clue in any accident is the data captured on the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR). These recorders were not found attached to the rack that normally held them in place at the rear of the aircraft.

Dean, is it relatively safe to drive down to the wild coast on my own in non 4x4 vehicle - bike in tow? I'm thinking a road trip is in order since the karoo trip seems a tad too overachiever right now.

Depends on where you are going. As to riding, I've never ever felt threatened, but then I'm a man, and I speak Xhosa fluently. The rural roads are safe. Not so the urban areas. You can't drive through Umtata with anything attached to vehicle. It will be stolen.

Best ride with someone else.

French heritage brand ST Dupont’s London-based PR group said it was “delighted to announce that their ST Dupont 007 Collection will be the official Royal Wedding gift on behalf of France from President Macron. (Prince Harry is reported to be a 007 fan!)”
