1st ride since 1 July 2015. Combo of work, illness and 3 courses of Anti-Biotic nightmares...

And I felt it. Had a very bad vomit session next to the road [emoji35]

Always found that my first commute after being off the bike for some time was the worst.  Always had that "try to keep your lungs from hanging in the spokes" feeling.  The next day was always better.

So true.

Even a 2 week break will set you back into dead legs first day.

Have a internal struggle...  Cycle home or take the car with aircon home....

But even with my winter statement.

The car will never beat a ride home even on hot summer days.

When you are moving on the bike your temperature is fine because you sweat.

A long stop at the robots or up a steep hill makes you drip a bit but just think about the good you are doing for yourself.

Even in winter, put a few extra layers on and you are set.

I havent had a car for the past few weeks, was letting a friend use it and I have had to cycle in this rough cape town weather we have been having.

The first week was tough. But then you man up and learn to deal with it.

You shower and change at work anyway so what does it really matter if you are wet anyway?

If you sit in any traffic in the car chances are is that your commute is quicker / or not much longer than sitting frustrated yelling at the taxis cutting you off.

Just one day back in the car opens up a can of road rage inside of me and I feel so miff from getting upset for no good reason.

So get on that bike and forget about the car.....

Its winter?

Been outside?  Was 26 degrees at a stage.  But the bike won the battle.  Felt better, but my arse was not happy at all...

Sometimes there's unexpected school holidays ... so traffic flows (even in Sandton) and car is faster or a week or sometimes two. And you can sleep slightly later in the mornings.

Then one morning you sit for 30 minutes in the queue by Benmore Gardens again to move 500 m while the taxis jump the queue in the oncoming lane again. Traffic's back.

So I'm back on the bike :)

The bike. The bike. Always the bike.

Think about taxis!

Think about loadshedding and traffic lights not working!

Think about cars blocking the the intersections and cutting in and turning right from the far left hand lane.

Focus!

:P

My office is on 11th... that traffic can really suck. I sit in the kitchen and watch every one get angry in the traffic as i sip a coffee! :-)

What a lovely commute it was this morning into work especially compared to yesterday's South Easter suffer fest

Woofie which route are we taking home today? Tiekie or Frans Conradie?

Anyone here cycling from The Reeds, Centurion to Midrand? I am seriously contemplating commuting once....maybe twice a week, if I can survive the Midrand portion. Wondering if anyone knows of some half safeish routes.? I will tackle this on the mtb so no need to stick to the black stuff

I'm keen on cycling to Midstream from Wonderboom. Car route is through the city, get onto N14, N1 then onto Brakfontein (30km). Freeway obviously no-go. Old Joburg has a nice wide gravel shoulder, but so many potential suspects wander along the same road... If I try to avoid the CBD (also lots of potentials) and use Botha from Fountains (another issue), my route becomes 40km, which is more or less 2hours...

Somebody is obviously going to tell me to man up, but muggings aren't fun... Otherwise some route advice will also be nice?

Perhaps you should use R55, get onto Olifants weg then onto Lever Road. Or get onto Samrand Avenue and then get onto Rooihiuskraal road which becomes Lever Road after Valley view estate i think
