I haven't done any Cape Epic's but was wondering why there is such a high drop out rate.

Anyone an Idea?

You don't need tons of training to be effective, so I was just wondering...

One of three things

  1. Undertraining
  2. Mentally unprepared
  3. Mechanical

I would imagine that anyone who dropped out would have been able to tick one of those boxes.

As for tons of training, I haven't done an epic but I beg to differ. It requires tons of training, in the region of 15 - 20hrs a week during the bigger blocks and immense amounts of sacrifice.

Also I suppose that lately a lot of companies think they can use it as a marketing exercise, so they get a team entered, and the poor suckers have no real idea what they got themselves into, or just do not have to time to do proper training. And maybe also some teams not having proper backup in case of mechanical failures.

Just from the extensive coverage of the race that i watched on DSTV i can tell u that it requires alot of training and the ability to push your body past the breaking point.

Overtraining, just as bad /worse than undertraining

I didnt think it was that high this year, actually. I think its been higher previously. Maybe someone knows the stats? I know the 1st Joberg2c there was a 33% drop out rate, which is much higher. I think maybe people are more prepared nowadays

Sorry if i'm opening a can of worms but i think the difficulty to finish the Epic is highly overated. To do well (top 100) i agree takes lots of training,to just finish i'm sorry, thats a lot easier than people make it out to be.
