Outdoors. Nature. Scenery. Solitude. Bunches. Mass events. Socialising. Fitness. Participation. Health. Friends. Wife.

I also enjoy golf and need to get back into swimming for some cross-training. Can't run to save my life.

It all started with a dare between a bunch of mates in std 6 (1996)... From there it turned into quite a lot of racing, where I managed to win 2 races as a junior.

After school I went to study and work, so cycling was no more, but at age 26, a couple of new colleagues motivated me to get a MTB. Getting back onto the bike, I remembered some past glories, so everyday I dream I can achieve them again...

Great qeustion! Personally I love to test/push my limits...been cycling for a year now. Always had a bike but never trained. Am a tennis coach and love individual sport. Can't blame anyone else but yourself.. Kinda love that about cycling.. I don't compete against others, but race against myself. If I happen to beat some guys doing that, well then thats also just fine! Best of all is that I get to do what I love in outdoors..Gods gift to us..nature....

when i am riding, i don't sit there thinking about how much fun i'm having. but when i am not riding... I ride because it is good fitness and a great skill blah blah blah, i ride because of that quiet time between the takeoff and the landing, that feeling of the rear wheel drifting about a tyre width out of shape, that burn in my legs when im sprinting for the next corner, that feeling when i get the front brake just right and the back wheel skips along the ground, that feeling that you are the your own limit, you challenge yourself, you don't rely on anyone else, its all you. Thats why i ride

What they said:

Started out as a health thing, progressed almost insantly to fun and stress relief, then more recently just a tinge of competitive satisfaction (mostly against myself - satisfaction from pushing and improving)

Suffering and effort for results I can be proud of.

Camaraderie.

Scenery.

Except the part of quiet time between takeoff. The only time this old tannie managed to be airborn, I shreeked like a little girl :)

That ice cold can of Coke that burns a dry thirsty throat...

You ride to drink a cold coke?

I was mtbiking in Jonkers today, I have been since my youth, and it still is just heaps of fun. The fitness challenge, rewarded by some awesome downhill st. Always something to explore, found that st built buy Specialized today it was just pure fun, and somehow got down it in one piece.

Fresh air, healthy exercise and a fantastic means of transport.

Also after 5 hours on the bike you can justifiably chow down like it's the pie-eating Olympics.

Also nobody can call you an alcoholic if you train 15 hours a week and have a resting heart rate of 30.

I palyed a lot of rugby at University. There are not many feelings that can equal a battered and bruised body with a cold beer shared with your buddies. I often wondered what other sport will give me the same sense of satisfaction when I quit Rugby.

Well, during my final year(6 years ago) I started cycling and did my first mountain bike race, the Magalies Monster 75km. It was 5 hours of tough riding, but after having a beer with a few fellow mountain bikers after the race, I knew what I was going to do with my free time for the rest of my life.
