RANT: Cape Town City cycle lanes

WOW !!!

I understand road rage in a cage ... lets face it, nothing worse than being STUCK in traffic.

But why all the aggression from cyclists ?  Not like we are stuck in traffic ...

okay, we play dodgems with large metalic objects.  We KNOW that way too many drivers are focussed on their social-media-connection-devices, and NOT on the road.  The list carries on and on .... but we KNOW this when we decide to take two wheels instead of a cage.

RELAX !

ENJOY the ride !!!

the poor caged prisoner will still be stuck in traffic ... but YOU can decide if you want to see red mist, or the lovely scenery, while enjoying your two wheels.

enjoy and be safe out there.

you sure you posting in the correct thread?!?

They are replacing it with smaller car lanes, parking on both sides and smaller bike lanes.

No date known for start.

My photo of the headline is a bit outdated (forgot to upload it after seeing the paper), but I did follow the thread on Twitter:  https://twitter.com/CTCycleLanes

It just confirms my impression that the lane has slowly eroded away with formal bus stops, loading zones etc in addition to cars just parking in the lane with impunity. It hasn't really been usable as a bike lane for quite a while now.

But in other news, the Constantiaberg area bike lanes are taking shape and looking good.

The city harps on about the whole reduce congestion thing by working from home and flexi time, they should be pushing cycling a lot more. There are so many 12km trips to town that would be quicker by bike than car.

Rant On

I am in bed with a Fractured Femur, because I was cycling on a Cycle Lane.

In the 15 years of me cycling, I have had a few bad days.

This is only my second time to have brocken bones.

I only use a short stretch of the Lane, about 3km in either direction.

I would not be in Bed if I chose to use the road instead.

Rant off

On approaching the Robot at the Paarden Island Flea Market.

Cycling from Woodbridge side into Town.

I noticed a cyclist approach me, I rode to avoid the guy and smacked into the Signpost pole in the Lane.

Came down hard.

Eina, but a user error?

In our group we have had 3 x "pole dancers" (2 ladies, 1 guy) making contact with the pole near the Woodstock station

Riding back from Yzerfontein one morning our one rider was a little tired and rode squarly into the concrete bollards in the lane near milnerton. Snapped from in half and he has a small batch of skin on chin which will never grow hair. Kept all his teeth though.

The worst part is now whenever we go near ANY bollards they get pointed out countless times to him.

hey be glad you HAVE cycle lanes ...

This side of the boerewors-curtain it is dodgems or pavement ....  :cursing:

jokes aside - YES, so many car drivers that really should use Uber.  We KNOW this.  Slow down just enough to pass these "individuals" safely and get on with an enjoyable ride.

As you and many others have said - not much you can do to that individual that wont put the net cyclist in danger .... so just smile and wave and get on with your day.

Few years back a taxi blocked my way.  I was late, I WAS in a hurry !!  I started hooting and shouting - not my proudest moment ...  The driver and his front passenger were laughing out loud at my antics ...... that day I promised myself I wont give an idiot that satisfaction again.  The more they "get in my way", the more I smile and wave outwardly .... irony is that a smile is most often rewarded by them quickly making way for you ....

On a bicycle I wont (really try not to) show an idiot driver that he is being an idiot.  And I certainly WONT do anything that will endanger the next rider.

had my fair share of knocks from cars in the Bellville area .... the CY's take no prisoners on the roads.....but they still better than CF and CFR drivers!

on a positive note - they're going to start on the cycle lane between Melkbos and Blouberg soon.

They have widened the road already. Will this just be a painted lane on the shoulder? Or a totally separate lane still to be built?

Bunch of clowns doing it have taken over the parking lot at my favourite surfspot to get this done!

Less than 400m further down the road is a monstrous parking area that would not have impeded anyone if they sectioned that off!

But in other news, the Constantiaberg area bike lanes are taking shape and looking good.

Bike lanes are progressing along Spaanschemat/Orpen Rd, but still gaps and unfinished sections here and there.

It seems that there are on and off road options - having ridden both, I wanted to make an observation without sounding whiney and then thought that I would keep my opinion to myself so as not to appear ungrateful...

But then Rob Vogel shares my opinion, but worded it better (in the PPA newsletter) and even did something about it (which I wouldn't have):

A number of you would have seen the cycle paths taking shape along Spaanschemat River Road near Tokai. I cycled on the newly asphalted section past Constantia Uitsig two weekends ago and noticed how bumpy the ride was. I pointed this out to the local ward councillor, Liz Brunette, asking her to get the contractors to run a roller over the entire section. What we don’t want is a brand new cycle lane not being used because it’s uncomfortable to ride on

While they are at it we should ask them to add berms.

We so need berms around the roundabout...
