I decided at the beginning of this year to forego the mass-market races in lieu of "proper" mtb events like the Magalies Monster. Last year I did all the Trailseeker races and was mostly disappointed with the lack of interesting, challenging terrain - although the race at VG was awesome.

Now that I have experienced the Monster I want more!

What other 1-day races in and around Gauteng would you consider "proper mountain biking"?

Unfortunately I can't make the Thaba Toughee this weekend....

We often go for a week end to the mpumalanga races.

Sabie

Barberton

Forest2falls (graskop)

Induna (Hazyview)

Also other areas in weekend traveling distance

Hilton/Natal area has some awesome rides

Clarens

Those are all worth the drive and are much better than the Gauteng races. Take the family and make a week end out of it.

I'd say the Vori berg races are quite nice, have also heard that the redstone race can be a little challenging? but haven't done any myself

Most of the Lowveld / Escarpment events are descent mtb routes - try Forest2Falls next year, it's awesome. bit of a mission back & forth though.

Rooiburg should be good - picking up from Lion Man which was always great.

Longer Dirtmax route in Parys is a good ride, bit of district road and some technical stuph.

Otherwise GP local ones rond die plotte are really flat and unexciting, but sometimes nice to get a few k's in. Cullinan is second best to Nissan Van Gaalens but I am going to avoid their own events from now.

I found voriberg harder than redstone....hows that dirtmax race in Parys?

Then there is also Nissan Van Gaalns

Look at Redstone race in Magalies

i saw a comment here on thehub along the lines of "redstone is one of the toughest 50km events in the area"... i would assume excluding the monster, of course. keen to try it out, have ridden sections of it. probably next on my list.

Its a pity Legend Gorge went all corporate and became an 3 day event for the well heeled, that was/is a great route

Isn't there a single day race the week before?
