Compared to shooting R600.00 + rand a weeknd on paintballs playing 12.5 bps with burst.... MTB parts dont seem so pricey anymore.

Youll shoot easy 28.8k + in a year ,thats without comps :whistling: or new gun & kit every season ....

You win. That is exactly what I do.

Thanks for the badge but riding the Spruit once a week and pushing your bike up a hill more than riding it really doesnt cause that much wear and tear

Me and a mate of mine, a devoted MTBer and MTB tech junkie where were talking over the weekend. We couldn't help but fall on the topic of the sheer cost and ongoing expense of what the sport of mountain biking has become.

Don't get me wrong, I have, I am and I would any day pay the price for this sport I love so much.

We have come to justify that paying R500+ for a mountain bike tire is "ok" and surely it is, it has to be. But what other option do we really have? Is there any other option or will we all be sitting on Chinese carbon and home made mods in the end?

My expenses have not been crazy high: Built up a new bike this time last year Shimano MT55 wheels and Deore spec, done 4000kms 90% in the dirt.

Replaced 1 tyre, sidewall tear

Brake pads front and back

1 bottom bracket.

Clean the bike one a week, oil before every ride, re grease all bearings every 2 months. Far cheaper than running a dirtbike. My son has a silverback alpine 1, with exactly the same replacements and similar mileage.

What are your guys costs?

How are you guys spending so much on maintenance?

This year I spent:

- R100 on a new XT chain (clever shopping)

- R60 on new cables

- R100 on a brake bleed

- R1100 on new tyres (wanted them vs needed them)

- R100 on rags, lube and grease

Total for the year - R1460 / 10 months - R146 per month since Jan.

Even if I had to do a BB and cassette replacement I would still be in for under R2500 for the year. I ride with XT/XTR on my Morewood and Saint/SLX/XTR on my Jamis. All expensive parts that last long.

Nothing stops you from running SLX or Deore bits on the drivetrain. You can really enjoy the sport without spending a fortune.

Agree, but add in your insurance and its about 3k for the year

Ja, when you look at it that way and throw in a couple of tyres, maybe a chain or two, some bits and bobs to keep the bike running and its a fair amount!

BUT for me its still cheaper than the R10,000 a year I used to be spending on smokes! And thats before booze and nights out etc!

Like your avatar, where and what?

Yeah mtbking is expensive especially if you have to have the latest greatest bike / equipment or more than 1 bike...BUT if you stick to the basics, don't get caught in the marketing trap just replace parts when they need to be replaced its not to expensive.

I started playing golf a few years ago, talk about expensive just to go play never mind the equipment.

Imagine you have to pay to go ride every time?

I just chose bikes over a wife and family... My one long term girlfriend many years ago was like, 'the bikes and adventures or me'.... so I suddenly had extra room in the garage and more closet space.

Had to find someone to feed the cat when I went away though......

I think the money thing is relative. I run a pretty top spec SS but I have replaced the chain twice this year at 50 ZAR each and some lube and maintenance bits.... It looks after itself.

If I had to look at how much money I have spent on Diesel to races, race food, race entry, air miles, game juice, and other related things I would probably cry...... and if I hadn't spent it on those race related things I would probably have a couple of new bikes instead so its all the same at the end of the day.....
