Plenty of empty sachets on the R44 when I drove to a client this morning. Disgusting, this is my hometown, worst of all is these young farm kids who pick up these sachets and suck the remaining gel out. Highly dangerous to them. Some people just dont give a f%@k.

While waiting for the $ bunch to start, a rider in front of me tossed his empty gel to the floor. I tapped him asked him to pick it up. He just ignored me. Only afterwards when some other riders who also saw what happened gave him some choice words did he pick it up.

Just shows the ignorant attitude of some riders.

From a Ironman SA race rules:

7. LITTERING: Absolutely no littering is allowed on the course. Athletes may only get rid of litter within the

demarcated zones at the aid stations. Littering outside the littering zone equates to DISQUALIFICATION.

And yes they do enforce it. Several people have been disqualified for littering.

Give an A5 flyer to every entrant at registration with that text in very large font. That will stop most who don't know. Those who do continue will eventually get caught and DQed. Put it in the race rules that a signed affidavit by another competitor is enough for a DQ.

From a practical point of view, tuck your gel packet in the bottom of the leg of your shorts. As you enter the water point area, just flip it out. No mucking around in your back pocket. Much easier. If you sucked the stuff out, it won't be sticky anyway.

Perhaps someone should develop an eco sensitive gel packet.

One that bio degrades in a few weeks/months.

I would think that would be a big step forward for a supplement manufacturer.

I hear what you are saying...but......

I have to disagree with you here Wayne...as it is essentially condoning the act and saying "hey, its ok to litter, they are bio-degradable"

I did the Berg n Dale this weekend and was completely ashamed at the attitude of some riders, I am very vocal and had several heated discussions with cyclists that had thrown things down while riding, I approached the first culprit and politely said to him as I passed, " you dropped your wrapper" I got a blank stare so I repeated and saw him start to look slightly annoyed and embarrassed. I had a puncture an was passed by the same guy who no more than 10 min later did the same thing.

that's when I gave up being polite an d called him a F***ing pig as I rode passed, this turned into a heated argument. I have reported him to the race organisers for this as well as several others I saw doing similar things on the road thanks to their race numbers, whether or not anything will happen to them or not I don't know.

I am completely disgusted to be called a cyclist after this weekend. littering is one of my biggest bug bears and this kind of behaviour pisses me off more than I can actually describe.

I think we should create a stick thread and name and shame with numbers and names if people posting are willing to get them from the race organisers, I know I am, but doubt though this will do anything as the hub is a small place compared to the cycling community and lets face it people that have no shame in littering probably aren't going to take any notice anyway.

personally I think if we as a cycling community take numbers and report to the race organisers a fine of R500 should be issued to the rider and no entry to the next event with their chip should be allowed till the fine is paid.

that's a little utopian I know but I think its a great idea.

I can never understand why cyclists throw empty wrappers on the ground when there is a perfectly good river or stream to throw it into
