Exactly what I'm going to do. My Elixir 7 have squeaked to the point that it causes vibration, and thats since they were brand new with no bike shop having been able to resolve it.

But did you remember to clean out the puke from your last ride.!!!

I've recently brought an secondhand 2011 Giant Anthem that has Avid Elixir CR brakes. Needless to say, I'm not very happy with the performance of the brakes .. besides the fact that they are almost never quiet. Is there something one can do to fix the performance and noise issues ? Does not look like the brake pads needs replacing, but maybe there is a better brake pad that does the job better?

My first instinct is to chuck 'em and go XT, but the budget is not looking so great right now.

Then again .. I would prefer to leave the tree-hugging (due to bad brakes) to the greenies.

What do you recon?

My avids have always made a noise. Fitted sintered pads, seems quiet now.

I have the SRAM XX brakes on my bike, in essence just a lighter version of the Elixers.

Also experienced the shuddering when braking hard and noise when the rotor rubbed against the brake pads.

Following advice from CWC I replaced the pads with Xon pads, problem solved, they are quiet and brake really well, what makes this even better is that they are cheap.

Don't go the XT route, there is nothing wrong with XT, if only the XT brakes could live up to the hype.. (before I get stoned, I know what I am talking about, my wife has them)

Blame the mechanic, not the brakes. Nothing wrong with them if you know how to set them up properly.

They do need more frequent maintenance and rebuilding than Shimanos, but when they work they work properly. A bit like owning an Italian car really.

Amazing how few people actually have the patience and understanding to bleed and service them properly...

Boom and there we have it....

Avid = Alfa....nuff said. Life is to short to worry about avids....and when you are screaming down a hill, which one would you rather have...deep down inside.

Got Avid Elixr 1's on the bicycle. Rear brakes are noisy, but so what! The dogs skrik so much when they chase after me and I grab a hand full that I actually enjoy the noise.

the replies to this topic was so easy to predict

Have the brakes bled & serviced, check the pads for minimum wear, if you need to replace (or even if they are in good condition), give them a light sand on a P120 grit sand paper (i mean like very light sand) and finally deglaze rotors. BOOM, just like that problem solved - well for me and like 99% of all other Avid users....
