The first time I rode I was living in CT, I suffered, every hill or acceleration by the group, heart rate just went up and up. Have been living here 4 years now, so no issues.

There...you answered your own question?

Reading between the lines, they know that Riversands road is not going to be finished, and parts of the start pens will be gravel.

I'm okay, I've got my gatorskins :whistling:  :P

I will be parking at Fourways and cycling to start for MTB race. its about 6km so a nice warm up. If it is OK and i think the road is wide enough for a bike, i will be doing the same on the road bike next week. I have very little faith in a smooth, easy  and organised access for cyclists and cars to the parking for the two events.

Have a feeling i will have plenty of company.......

Was contemplating the same strategy.

Either Fourways mall or Broadacres...

Just not sure of the access from Broadacres through Steyn City to Riversands?

Not so keen on parking in a dust bowl (or mud pit, depending on the weather) and fighting with 30 000 other frustrated people to get access/leave the venue for hours.

Would rather ride from/to a more secluded spot.

I agree.

There may be plenty of area available for parking, but access is going to be chaotic.

Add the rain that is currently being predicted at 60%, and it should be a fun day.

what would you guys think for a first timer doing this race, road bike(2 x 8 speed) or mountain bike(3 x 9 speed ) with slicks?

It's not about the speeds, it's about gear selection.

If they are not chasing time ,mountain bike .

I collected my MTB number yesterday. The roads around that are are chaos. It took nearly an hour to go from Riversands back to Fourways. There is no way in hell that the venue is going to cope with the cyclists this weekend, never mind next.

And tell your family and supporters to stay at home - the entire area is just one big dust bowl.

Park at Fourways, roll down the hill to the start. It will be a bit of a grind to get back to Fourways after the race, but probably quicker than if you're in a car.

I am doing exactly the same. Most people I know in and around the area are also doing that.

Best plan ever.

There is plenty space on the "roadworks" side of William Nicol to cycle in.

MTB - no problems, Road - could be puncture haven.

It only becomes a problem when crossing one of the intersections just before the Indaba Hotel as they were still busy rebuilding that road surface.

I'm contemplating doing the same for next Sunday - just need to figure how I will carry my rollers to the hospitality area and back  :whistling:

Thanks for the heads up. I have a feeling parking is going to be a slight issue........... Only problem is we might all end up parking at fourways.

I am acclimatized by now, I was thinking of a friend that is coming from the coast. How the change in altitude will affect him.

Altitude definitely has an effect. Up to -10% my last coach suggested. I often went through the same thing landing in Jozi ahead of the race. If possible try landing at 4 days prior to raceday or leave it till the last minute; Ie. Land the night before.

That's what the All Blacks do/used to do. They set up camp in Durban and fly in a few hours before kick-off. That way the body hasn't yet realised what's up.
