Nobody will want to play SA soon. They'll be considered a second rate team.

Heard SA were trying to get Olympic games for Durbs? No SA swimming team,no SA Tri Team and no SA ladies hockey team and the list goes on.

Mbalula is a clown......never thinks before he speaks.

Its tough. I don't think cycling gets much funding from government in any case, yet development is happening through private funding. Just look at Songo.info as an example.

Sadly, "leaders" like Fikile Mbalula are the problem. The top-down approach our politicians and national sporting bodies insist on taking to produce a representative South Africa is utterly useless.

Imagine if every South African had the opportunity to pursue their talents in sport, as opposed to the small minority that currently have this chance, we'd be unbeatable. Government must start supporting sport with proper strategy and money. If you train them, they will come.

Exactly. Why not go to the source? They force the bodies to throw in a majority of black players in now. But invest some money in coaching the young kiddies (from everywhere). Imagine how many kids could be taught to play rugby/cricket/soccer/hockey/tennis with R246 mil.

Its pretty hard to create athletes if you don't provide the basics at a primary school level. If schools had the funds we would have more athletes.

But as you say, the Chief's big hut is more important than the rondawels of the people building it.

Instead, lets just blame the system. The system can only be held accountable if there are sufficient athletes to begin with.

Sadlyin SA, if you are interested in a sport, have the means to a coach or coaching, you will get there. thre isno real competition for placements

So, does this mean he will interfere in all other sports like Surfing, Superbike Racing, Motorboat Racing, Polo, etc? Hell, I can make a very long list of some exclusive and obscure sporting codes. He is off his rocker that man.

20 years after the first democratic vote for all South African's and we're still asking the question...

I think we can, but they are all on different teams. Can't get them all together?

I think we have some darn fine black riders in SA. Expose them to racing in Europe and there will be some fantastic cyclists.

I think this is also really unfair for the black sportsmen and sportswomen.

How would you feel, being selected for the national squad, but now not sure whether it's on talent or purely your skin colour. We know athletes are achievers. Those who train so hard, all day, every day, with talent and massive potential. Now, how do you know if you've really achieved, or are just part of a quota?

I think they're doing no one the favour.

Rather, split development funding for kids and teens. It'll take ten more years, but at least then the squads will be the best group of those who trained the hardest, worked the most, and have the mental conditioning required to handle the pressure and position.

Just think this is for show, not for go.

send them, the best black cyclist why not? for 50 years us whites had a free ride. Why not give the people who didnt have access to those opportunities a chance?

I have a colored friend who race'd in SA in the 80, if he got a top 3 finish he was not allowed to podium. heard the same thing from Gary Player concerning local golf tournaments.

And if they'd started 15 years ago, we'd be 5 years into a golden era of SA sport by now.

People please. This is pure propaganda to get votes. They know they are not gonna get 9 "Black" players in the rugby team or 6 in the cricket team any time soon, and forcing it will result in some serious revenue losses for the country.

In school sports you can see a huge rise in real black talent because kids are being exposed to sports other than soccer and athletics, but only about 5% of these talents(black, white, indian or coloured) end up as professionals because there is just way too much competition. Eventually these numbers will start filtering through to the professional teams and then we will see a balance(read "accurate representation").

Why do you think this political conversation only comes up every 4-5 years????

Lets get real. The ANC isn't dumb...arrogant, but not dumb.

With a couple of notable exceptions, South Africa doesnt produce internationally competitive cyclists of any colour. 100km local races dont equip anyone for Europe, so to me, its a moot point.

On local racing, there seems to be growing representation of different groups among the prizewinners.
