Dude!! How you can direct a noob to suikerbosrand!!! They will give up cycling!!!-Unless they are a masochistic idiot like the rest of us!

Lol ... I did say "found your cycling legs" ????

But yes ... you are right - I have to add a couple of words to that ...

So Ulfa, SBR or Suikerbosrand is an awesome ride with game viewing in a very scenic nature reserve - but it has a couple of good climbs, something like 1100m ascent over 58km. There is a water point half way - but yes, please make sure your legs are ready for this ride ????

Joining up with a group of people at Northern Farm is a great place to start....no debate if you're new to the MTB thing.

The spruit can be a total circus sometimes!! Its like the N1 highway mostly, constant "traffic"of all sorts

The Spruit is a nice easyish ride with some fun bits thrown in off the sides if you are feeling adventurous.

I would definitely recommend riding from Fratellis up to Emmarentia and back. It is about 20kms and the second half is almost completely downhill. :)

thanks, I'm going to give northern farm a bash and cycle lab.

I think I will replace my cardio which i do during the week at gym with spinning! Hopefully this will help me.

Good idea ,I started a year ago during the Cape Town winter period and though it’s not a substitute for mountain biking it can make quite a big difference especially if you actually turn the yellow knob in a clockwise direction when prompted to do so.You will notice quickly how you progress.

While you work on fitness can I suggest you get hold of Slick and do a few skill training rides with him.

By the time you get the fitness up your skills will be quite polished too and you will have a great time on the bike.

Groenkloof is safe solo ito of security imo, but for a novice you will need to be shown around, and there are some technical bits. Its also a bit of a drive from Jhb which has become a factor price-of-fuel and e-toll wise. But its a great place to go for a mtb ride, a real treasure.

Northern Farm is the best place for a beginner in my opinion: well-marked, flat and easy routes, busy.

I picked up a Johannesburg Mountain Biking Club pamphlet there yesterday - www.jmbc.org.za

Looks like they do easy rides at 8-12kph for beginners, not sure where though.

JBMC do group rides for all levels (green is beginners group) at different venues so is an easy way to ride and are out most Sundays, is a good way to see different places, you dont even have to join, can just go on the day and pay a nominal fee

Northern farms is pretty safe if you stick to the main routes, Sundays gets pretty busy there http://www.northernfarm.co.za/
