The carnage on our roads is not as a result of cyclists skipping red lights.

Percentage of road deaths caused by cyclists = 0%

Percentage of road deaths caused by motorists, truckers and motor cyclists = 100%

Yeah its hard to kill someone else by riding a bicycle.

Its the attitude of the person behind the steering wheel

Percentage of road deaths caused by motorists, truckers and motor cyclists who have the same or similar attitude = 100%

I guess there is also a big difference between a cyclist/s yielding, then riding through a red light that has no traffic at the green at 5am and a cyclist/s blatantly flying through a red light on a main road. Not sure which category the original post is referring too, but I'm sure every cyclist (including the Pope) has done the former.

I know it's still wrong but what to do at 5am and the light is pressure pad activated. What are we supposed to do in this case?

Reading these threads has made me much more aware of my actions and those around me.

The other thing to take into consideration is that I have yet to see a hubber come here and post about a single cyclist stopping at red light at 5am, looking both ways a few times and rolling over it.

The complaints here are usually about big groups in organised rides, usually when its late enough for it to be witnessed.

So lets not confuse the two.

So, what's your thoughts on the attitude of a person who breaks the law? You think their attitude changes when they slip out of their lycra and behind the wheel of their car?

Me personally, I think if a guy breaks the law, then that's what he does. Same as if a guy is a arrogant prick at work, he's probably an arrogant prick in all spheres.

Cyclist skips red. Motorist swerves to avoid cyclist and hits pedestrain.

Was this caused by the motorist ?

I think we should allow cyclist to turn left even when traffic lights are red and it is safe to do show. Kinda like in Holland.

"Do I have to stop for a red traffic light?

Yes, like in other countries all cyclists have to stop for a red traffic light. However, there is one exception. At traffic lights with the sign ‘Rechtsaf voor fietsers vrij’, cyclists turning right don’t have to wait for the light to turn green. Do look out for pedestrians that might be crossing the road as they have right of way."

Apparently being a hypocrate is a bad thing, and one should not be one.

Like cellar said, it only counts if you obey the rules and set an example when you are in your car, and on the bicycle.

This also means not driving over painted islands, not cutting corners. Stopping on yellow. Texting, Phoning. Following distances, keeping left obeing the speed limit (shocker) Shouting at the kids. etc....etc...ad nauseum...

Yeah you're right, but where does one draw the line then, are all lights at 5am stop 'n go if alone only. I'm just trying to get the general unwritten rule here, I'm new to cycling and have no problem stopping at red lights later in the day.

You're thinking of the one where they told the kids to write about rape and a loaf of bread or some such rubbish. Same idea though.

This attitude is why I have zero conscience about taking out anyone doing stupid and/or illegal things on the road.

Hoot at a pedestrian for walking out in front of you and the slow walk and death stare is mandatory. The same at a cyclist being a poephol and you risk middle fingers, cleats to the door and all manner of abuse.

I'm over trying to teach people how to ride responsibly, and because of rubbish behaviour from many roadies and most motorists I no longer ride on the roads. Ever.

I will do my best to avoid anyone who skips a light, swerves in front of me or otherwise does anything dumb in my path, but if you get hit I promise you I will feel nothing, and this includes the damages claim which will find its way to you or your estate.

Riding passed waterfall estate on my way up to the kyalami gates I got passed by a group of maybe 20 cyclelab riders,on reaching the 1st robot all the leaders went straight through taking the whole group with them.I asked (made a statement) one of the last guys 'you guys are going straight through a red robot'!? I got a blank stare back.

Cannot believe how blatant this is!

With all the effort going on for cyclists rights and to be noticed and respected on the roads its frustrating seeing this done out in the open with no care and in club kit! Senior members of the club should be addressing this!

Sorry to those sick of hearing the same thing but had to say something.

Would you have reported this, if they hadn't passed you ?

i.e. you were stronger than them.
