fanievb Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Honest Question.... Do the Afrikaans folks on the hub, find the Term "Dutchman" offensive? yes it is offensive, I am not a dutchman. I am South African
Cois Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I have Afrikaans folks, but when I am mad I switch to English, I also pray in English and went to an English church, almost failed Afrikaans and passed English with a B. Grandmother was Jewish, English married a Dutch bastard that refused English in his house. So grandmother was a mix of English (the proper kind) and Afrikaans. Father says he is not English, but his English is much better than most people I have met and much better than my mom's.

Wayne Potgieter Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Many years ago, i managed a wiesenhof coffee shop. We had a particular couple of regulars, older folks that would only speak afrikaans and would leave if you spoke english to them. They were very nice, as long as you observed the afrikaans only rule. One night, the tannie orders a slice of Carrot cake. The cake was a bit dry on the one side from being open, so she complained to the waitress. We replaced it with a fresh slice and as is custom, I, as the manager went up to the table to enquire if everything was ok. I approach the table, and in my VERY broken Afrikaans i ask "Jammer Mevrou, Is jou koek nat?" Immediately as the words escape my mouth, i turn a horrible shade of RED. The oom bursts out laughing , the tannie also. From that day on, i was the only one allowed to speak English to them. True story. JJDT, Stretch, slowashell and 29 others 32
fanievb Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) AGREED BUT IF WE HAVING A FEW BEERS/COFFEE AND I SAY LIGHT HEARTEDLY HEY DUTCHIE PASS ME THE BEER PLEASE WOULD YOU STILL TAKE OFFENCE??/ no not at all, in fact most of the English peeps I know I refer to as Soutie, so its basically the same thing. I must also add that i can't be called dutchman cause I am a mixture of French/Belgium/English/German so it would be more appropriate to call be "baster" hence I say I am a full (Mix) breed South African Edited May 6, 2014 by fanievb Wannabe and DIPSLICK 2
