I received a notification of the "Northern Farm Winter Quickie" race.. Entry fee R200 for the 45k

event. I replied to the mail asking, where they not stretching it a bit on the entry fee.

I got a reply saying... Oh! they don't have a sponsor, would I like to find one for them?

Today I get an sms saying if you enter before 1st June, entry fee R180.00

I give up, I will not pay that to race at Northerns.

Sheesh.. Good think you guys don't play golf...

It seems, on average, for anyone who buys entry to mid level equipment, including helmet, bike, sunglasses, shoes, pedals, bike, cages, etc, etc, you'd spend between 10 and 15k...

Now, you want to competitively use that equipment, and both about it costing a couple of hundred bucks?

How much does dinner for one at a decent restaurant cost nowadays? Stuff is expensive, but for what you get, a bike race entry fee is not that bad...

But here's the real kicker...

If it's too much, don't buy it. Simple. Easy. Go ride somewhere else.

Or one more tip - ride a road bike! That way, you won't have to pay entry fees for training rides, and you can save then all up for a race...

How does the cost of a 75km and 45km entry increase so much?

Magalies monster cost R360. But Van galens is R420? Somebody is coining it

The great thing about a free-market economy is that the somebody could be YOU !

Why don't you start a race and make a fortune ?

R420... that's pretty much a year on the mtn. Or at least 3 decent all-you-can-eat from some noted sushi houses. Part of a tyre. Not much of a pair of decent shorts. A massage and a bit. Not as much as you'd like of craft beer. shade under a 1/2 of a tank of fuel. Shade over a service. 1/4 of a cheap dropper post.

I only ride races on my skinny wheel bike on the tar now and just ride trails on my dirt bike. So many good spots to have fun, session and hit not sure why i'd enter for fun and if I cruise it then impact my hard earned results on the road. MTB races are pricey.

If I want to ride 50km+ I'll go road and do it fast, smooth and with no loss of power, bob or slipping around.

being somewhat closely associated with event management and entries, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of entries in the past two years and the trend is downward. This is largely because of the economy pinch. Net Result is that for events to break even they need to up their prices slightly to counteract the decrease in numbers. We have seen quite a few events in KZN fall off the calendar due to lack of numbers...so if its an event you like then try and support it because chances are...it wont be there next year........BUT......R420 is ridiculous...Fro R450 I can buy a years membership to Karkloof and go and ride karkloof and howick trails whenever I want

Be careful, if you keep up too easily your new BF might be the one looking like an eejit....

I can't bring myself to enter this one considering it normally costs me R15 entry to ride there!

A bad mtb result will have zero impact on your hard earned road results - they only take your best 3 results...

Or if you really paranoid leave your timing chip at home.

But in principle agree, why pay a race fee to ride on trails that you can do for cheap whenever you like. I never enter a race on one of my local trails (for that I already got Strava  )

So did I, 1x75 entry and 1x45 entry, still more than 20% more expensive than the monster and 25% more expensive than last year, why is that, inflation?

i went to wimpy the other day it was 20% cheaper than a local grill shop, its called business supply+ demand+service provided, if you dont want to go to a race that is 20% more dont,,go for a ride and skip the race, just as business gets to their selling price for goods and they dont have to explain to you the customer how he got to the selling price neither do race organizers. I KNOW WHATS INVOLVED THEY NOT "PRINTING" MONEY for the entry fees we are paying for day races trust me

I must say I am super glad that I am not involved in cycle events, us cyclists always have "something" to complain about.

People want the costs to stay low but then they moan about the goodie bags being crap or not enough toilets or not enough route marking...... kan niks reg kry nie, shame.

I really love riding races, but lately I ask myself, why would I want to pay to have fun, when I can have as much or even more fun on my own, for free!!!???

But if the races is in places where I don't normally ride, that 's a whole other story!

And not to mention the CSA fee that gets added onto races . I am still waiting for CSA to explain to me what I get for all this money I am paying .
