Thanks Grebel; can I ask who did these for you and roughly how much?

I think I have small ear holes (my wife says they are selective about what they let in) so use half a foam plug in each but they still often come out. Custom may be the answer.

Some pics as promised:

1. They come in a nice padded zip up case

2. Contents include the earplugs, a cleaning cloth and a plastic pick. The cord clips to your jacket/shirt so you don't lose them if they come out of fall in the dirt

3. The removable filters. These are 26dB industrial units but they come in 19, 24, or 26dB variants. I haven't tried the others but after a commute, my ears don't ring any more than normal (Tinnitus is a b!tch...) I still need to test them with my Sena and see what the quality is like. Busy charging right now.

(Tinnitus is a b!tch...)

That it is.

I do not hear our house alarm because all the ringing and whistling in my ears are to "load"

Strange if I sleep, small things wake me that once I am up, do not hear anymore.

I went to an ear clinic. hearing aids, that stops tinnitus is between 8 and 14 k.

Yeah, I have certain frequencies band that I can't hear. I've had it so long (more than 25 years now) it's almost like it's normal....

Now I just need to protect what's left :D

Thanks Grebel; I also suffer a little from tinnitus; the far off diesel loco or generator and I have only recently started using ear plugs after decades of nothing, many of them in open face helmets. Time to investigate.

wonder how badly commuting daily on the bike, with most day's being a stiff South Easter can effect ones ears?

Probably quite badly.  But you'll only know about it in 15 years time.

at 55 then ..... by that time it would be a blessing :P

Been using a buff over the ears on the commuter as of late, and this does dramatically reduce wind noise....will keep doing this then.

Impressive. How the heck do you ride on that surface?

You just go....

I asked Jade Gutzeit that question once when we were about to hit some stones alongside a railway track. His answer was pretty simple.

Stand up, look up, open up....

Yup, that's pretty much it! Stand up, keep the front as light as possible (I have Steg Pegz which help with that), and keep momentum.

There are loads of pebbley trails in Canterbury, so one gets used to it.

Some of the pebbley jeep tracks (average pebble size approx 40mm diameter) feel pretty comfy at 70 - 90kph on the straights, and to me cornering on that type of surface feels far more predictable than loose over hardpack. One just has to look up and ahead for the bigger outlying rocks.

Enjoyed the post

Are you using your phone as a GPS and what phone mount is that?

Yup, I'm using my old phone (Galaxy S7) for navigation.

I use Viewranger and another NZ specific app for loading routes and tracks.

I don't really trust any of the gripping type mounts for the bumpy stuff, so my solution was to stick a GoPro mount to the back of the phone, then use the Ram attachment for a gopro to connect it to a 100mm Ram arm which is in turn connected to a Ram base plate bolted to the nav tower.

It's not pretty (on the phone), but it's solid, VERY adjustable to suit any angle, and I can always throw a GoPro in it's place if desired.

Unfortunately my bike is 1000km away, so have to resort to an older, less detailed pic.
