We had not one but two guys in my junior school year whose fathers were former F1 drivers. The guy whose father was a then current MP didn't feel as special!

Right you are, forgot that both Mass and Scheckter used to live in Cape Town. But now I even remember that Mass had a holiday place in Still Bay. Always wondered what it had over Monaco? :whistling:

I have my program from the 1976 SA GP at Kyalami autographed by Jackie Stewart. We were part of the scouts that did the scoreboard opposite the grandstands. It was right next to the VIP enclosure on the pits roof so we had access to almost all the luminaries and were completely star struck by them all (those we recognised).

well, ja, both divorced too so were not on the scene much by the time kids were in junior school! Mass had married a local meisie (a model of course, you know the drill) so that explained the local connection.

now that i think about it, we had another guy Keith who did gokart racing (his dad had never been a F1 racer) and was quite good at it, we used to joke that the Scheckters would beat him if they got bored of cricket. He ended up being a fighter pilot in the RAF.

Tomas Scheckter ended up driving after school for F1 teams and then moving to Indy car when things went pear shaped. If only he could have found these sort of gaps as a flyhalf when the Paarl schools would drill us weekly?!

there ends te extent of my Formula one knowledge/interest.

Wo - OT but It takes big berries to keep the loud pedal flat when looping around an oval at upwards of 245MPH. Respect to anyone who then decides to take the outside line on to the marbles. Indy is coming up this month in May. Qualifying at over 230MPH and that's after they have slowed them down from the insanity of some years ago - that means an average speed of over 230 MPH for a mile oval. G forces that will rip your face off on the turns...

I would love to be there on the day of the final - the sound of 30 Indy cars rumbling in to the first corner must be something that will make your hair stand up on your neck. Attendance is something like 300 000 people...

Good to see out maths teacher getting recognized.

I hope they gave him some hand cleaner with his medal.

Dude I had a good laugh there.  Back in the days when our PO was still proper and people still trusted each other we used to order the 3hr Video Cassettes and then pass them around our group of friends.  Usually you ordered the cassette, paid and then when you sent it back they used to send you the next one.  In our case, one tape passed through 3 or 4 kids before it got sent back.  All the parents paid, and no-one ever dared not send it back.  And you never worried once it was posted, because it wasn't going to get lost.

I used to sit through 2 hours from 2-4 and then the last hour from 5-6 in the morning.  Got me an A in science at the end of the year.

And his hands were always covered in Blue and Red ink!

If it wasn't for him I probably would've failed Science.

took me a while to work that one out

he is actually STINKING RICH, and the reason he had a picture of knysna behind was because he owned half of the town (well just the heads/featherbed reserve).

He sold it, with conditions it could never be fully developed.

Think of all other people who have inherited vast wealth and become total tjops, instead this guy went ahead and served masses with his time - I reckon he probably didn't even pull a salary from SABC. what a total legend.

Yes, I also only found about his (his family’s to be accurate) wealth about 10 years ago.

What was cool about that is that it was a complete surprise. Not one did he ever come across as a dude with bucks and that’s how people with bucks should come across.

He is a proper legend and he is very deserving of his recognition.
