Anyone else feel a bit duped by Buycycle.co.za's e-mail pamphlet advertising XT brake sets for R1595.00, but when you click on the link it's clear that a "set" is for caliper and lever?

I think this is classic click-bait and misleading advertising. Consumer Commissioner would have a field day with this.

You mean "everybody in SA"?

I think they are desperate for sales though and it is actually not the correct way in doing so. It is intended to 'pull people in'.

One example from one store overseas (most other word it the same)....what you see is what you get (there, not here in SA).

Common guys...it depends on the way you read it. Every person will see it different, I see the advertisement correctly some other will read it the other way.

For some it might be misleading and other not...no need to tune "Consumer Commissioner would have a field day with this" because you will just make your name "gat".

Just know logically the set could never be 1.5k...(even on their crazy sales 2.2k is about the best price) its +- always been 2.5k-3k for the last 2 years almost.

When i got a set for R998.98 per side(2k for full set from crc) that was still cheap

But I think that the point he is making ... you see an 'unbelievable' deal and you investigate ....only to be misled

That doesn't follow. Specials are popping up everywhere. Maybe it was clearance stock. Any multitude of reasons why it could be "half-price".

I was surprised by the price, which is why I told my friends about it. None of them went "no, impossible". They were all "wow, great price, oh, wait..."

And no I don't think I would make my name gat. There's clearly a lack of consistency in the advertising of brakes. Two main websites (CWC and CRC) are both very unambiguous in their advertising of brakes and brake sets. Buycycle clearly did it for the clicks.

To me a brake set is the whole thing. Front, back, levers, calipers - even the hoses and lever clamps. But, on the other hand, CRC, Wiggle and most of the others will advertise the cheapest component in the headline and you'll get stung when you hit the dropdown and select the whole lot. Happens with wheels too. Unethical? Maybe. Annoying? For sure. Illegal? Hmmm. Only one advocate in the room that I know of...

So if some shops advertise a "pair of glasses" for free I see it as one but some other people see it as 2 set of glasses I can go and tune false advertising? Different people different way of speaking, I personally think it is not intentionally, but hey go for it.

What I say here is before you go and make out that people are trying to shaft you make sure that maybe it is the way they see the meaning of a set" vs your meaning of a "set"

Lol. Look, I think there's a case to be made for misleading advertising. Buycycle has to know that there's a serious risk of confusion.

Ok, sure, it's not of such a nature that it will "mislead" you into buying something you thought was something else. It's more a case of it being click-bait, but that in itself is crappy.

Don't resort to straw man arguments. No one thinks a pair of glasses is two. No one thinks a pair of trousers means two trousers.

Clearly from just two websites I have demonstrated that the reference to "sets" is ambiguous and potentially misleading.

Why can I not insist on consistent and fair advertising?

If it's too good to be true...

There's actually an app for facebook called downworthy that translates click-bait hyperbole to plain English. It's pretty entertaining.
