These two books are my constant companions in summer. The field guide was chewed by my last Jackie as a puppy, when I left her in the bakkie one day. And the other, Stephens and Kidd's "Some South African Fungi", I found 2nd hand on Netbooks

I pick Boletus Edulis (Porcini / Cep), Pinerings, Poplar Bolete and Chicken of the woods. This is the biggest Chicken of the Woods we found in Tokai Forest while riding. (Sorry for blacking out my youngsters face).

I want to get a sod from the poplar bolete soil when I'm there. I don't have them in my poplar grove

I have heard you can tell which are edible and which aren't by looking at the "gills" on the underside. True or false??

False, you have to learn your mushrooms.

Never eat a shroom with white gills though, unless you are positive about id.

The 2 deadliest mushrooms in SA have white gills, the death caps.

The Death cap is the most poisonous mushroom known.

Let me know when you are in town, I'll gladly take you to the best spot in Cecilia forest.

I think they are very close to Boletus Edulus in flavour, except they lose it if you dry them, so best used fresh.

As a kid in Pinetown our neighbours used to pick mushrooms, I was constantly in trouble for eating with them. My mother was sure I would be poisoned. I was 9 at the time. They were a family of four. Mom, dad, daughter my age and a son a few years younger.

Long story short they made a mistake one day. Whole family died. It was a few weeks after we moved out of Pinetown. Surname was Pie I seem to remember.

And the scary part is that you don't have to eat much of it and by the time that you start to feel sick, the organ damage that it has done already, will kill you. Even with the best medical treatment, it is often too late. So, yes, it's not something you can just "try out". Best is to learn from someone who knows his stuff, and then to learn 1 or 2 species that are easy, before expanding. Whenever I pick something I don't know well, or that I ID'd from a book, I take it to my guru to double ID it before eating it. You only get 1 chance to get it wrong!

If you gave me a choice

Steak or Ikowe, I would choose Ikhowe every time

Fly Agaric. Ha ha, eating just the right amount of this will make you think you are chief of WADA, a beautiful girl with gills, a boy with a tail and the winner of the TdeF all at the same time. Eating too much, well, that will be the end of you all. :(
