Performance enhancing substances among amateurs

Or a ban? I didn't work my ass off for the last 12 months to get in Vets only to have to go up against amateur dopers!

Not sure what the criteria and/or standards for Vets

I imagine the doping watch is strong with Elite level.

Anyone have info?

You get no respect from me at all. I spit on the fact that you cheated. I hope I never meet you. And I tell you one thing I will beat you without drugs.

Copper, I feel like you’re missing the whole point of this tread, it’s try and confirm that the whole sport is ROTTEN with PED's, amateurs and professionals alike, what does this mean? It means(according to this tread) that guys that cycle exceptionally well are most probably using illegal substances while racing... From working class guys doing the Epic to guys doing a sub 2:50 Argus to guys doing sub 3:50 K2C's, OR, just the regular working class guy who pulls the crap out of the whole group on a Sunday morning club ride.. ROTTEN with PED's.. Especially testosterone and growth hormones... And obviously its not everyone, but it looks (according to this tread) like a big percentage(way to big if u ask me..)

This guy spilling his guts is a step in the right direction to exploiting this whole thing.. The sport of cycling has a cancer, and its fed by pride.. That’s why we have this problem, the guys will do anything, from spending 100k+ on a bike to something stupid like using illegal quantities of caffeine on race day.. They will do anything.. But ey,,, as long as you look good on your bike and perform well within the community..

Not saying what he did was right, but he is doing the right thing now.

I was never a cyclist, but a small town lad who trained 5 or 6 hours a day at my 'peak' in my sport. I never used any drugs. At various times of the year I was top ranked nationally, but every year I would come to Nationals and there'd be a host of people who suddenly would be super fast. Maybe it was training, maybe it was tapering properly, or maybe I just wasn't good enough...

I have no idea.

But what really f**ks me off is that I will never ever know that my passion, love for my sport and commitment ever reflected my true talent. And looking back at myself as a passionate laatie who was clueless but unbelievably dedicated to be an 'Olympic' athlete, I wander now if I could look my younger self in the eye and just say 'it's pointless, without cheating'.

And that's why I can't easily accept a faceless 'sorry I did it, but...'

Dope2Survive - please do something to make it safer and a more level playing field for tomorrow's youth, even if it's just something small in the end.

I think this post epitomizes why doping is such a big problem.

OK, So let’s make this reaaaally interesting, is there a hubber out there using some of this stuff? Testosterone or Growth Hormones, just want to know what the effects are, common man, create yourself a fake account and give us the low down, now judgement here

:nuke:

freudian slip?

That would be like saying if Oscar said sorry now it would be ok. Not for me I am afraid.

I don't think that anyone here thinks that letting dopers get of scott free is a good idea.

But information from past dopers is very useful to combat doping. You need the Tylers and Floyds to root out the Lances.

And in order for this information to come out, a diplomatic approach is needed.

The problem i feel is with the fact that these enhancement drugs are so easily available. I mean i went into springbok pharmacy to get myself "Cadence Recovery Revive" the other day and on the shelf not even 1 meter away was a pill bottle labelled EPO!

I mean any kid can walk into the shop and get this stuff off the shelf, he doesn't even need to go to the OTC section. Is it just me that thinks this is wrong?

I agree with you 100% as long as the info comes out, otherwise it's a bit of a pointless however interesting excersise.

Copperhead, my take on this is that one of the best ways to fight the use of drugs in cycling is to understand why people do it, how they do it and how they get away with it for so long. A confession like this contributes much more to our understanding of the problem than a pro testing positive pleading tainted meat.

After reading The Secret Race I had to ask myself what I would have done if I was put in a similar situation, giving up on your dreams & way of life vs doing what appears to be normal by the people that surrounds you, let's just say I'm glad I was never confronted with that decision.

That said, the abuse they are getting are part of the consequences of making wrong choices, they just have to take it on the chin...

Edit - just saw that GaryvdM was thinking along the same line, fools never differ  ^_^

Fascinating read!

I cycled competitively in the 80's as a school kid and student and got fairly decent results as junior at provincial and national level.

Then I became a fun rider.

Until the beginning of this year where I dropped 8 kilo's or so (back to my 80's racing weight) and did some quality training for a change.  Had a good Kremetart and suddenly I am invited to ride for a local Vets team.

Did a number of Vets races with some OK results - all 100% clean, I can assure you.

The mind boggles that supposedly many Vets are taking PED's - because to be honest, their results are not THAT outstanding!  Unless they are just playing with us mere mortals during the races.

I am currently involved in training others so this is very close to me. When people say it 'costs nothing' that's bull****. For every son or daughter of a wealthy family trying to live through their offspring, is a single mom or dad striving to get money together to help their child achieve a dream. I lived that. It's fine if you are a veteran and can make a decision to dope or not.

People can turn around and also say, yeah, but a Dogma makes you faster than a steel monstrosity and that's also a financial decision, and/or opportunity, but clearly that's moral relativism. Drugs can seriously harm a developing child, and one will not.

But I also believe that the only way to solve it is if the brave few come out and seriously hold the others to account. (and then they have to worry about being sued)

It is impossible to administrator EPO orally. It's probably just misleading marketing, claiming to have the same effects as EPO.

A quick check on Wikipedia revivals:

However, several compounds have been identified that can be taken orally to stimulate endogenous EPO production.

How effective are these, and what is their WADA status?

Wow this topic has lit up. This is what we were looking for guys. May it be the touch paper that lights the whole thing up but i don't think its going to.

Why don't you go on Carte Blanche anonymous. Whistle Blower case ?.

I do feel for all the guys involved in this that are really victims of something bigger and more sinister. Be it the rugby kids or the vets. Our values are so screwed and we are so hell bent on results as a complete society that the ends always justifies the means.....
