Performance enhancing substances among amateurs

Maybe we should pitch at a VETs Race in white Lab Coats with a few test tubes and see who scatters like meerkats when they see an bird of prey.

I have actually seen this happen!  Scary.

But again.......Testing old ballies with ego's gets you funding but it is not taking cheating out of the sport.

I see Drugfree SA testing a lot of athletics and schools these days.  That is cool.

On a separate note.

I would volunteer for testing if it was not that invasive on privacy.  I have a mental thing with people watching my piepie.  Call it stage fright.

If they could develop a finger prick test with blood, that would be nice.  And cheaper?  And immediate?

And if there is a "flag", then you supply full bloods as required.

Something to that effect might change it around?  Getting a test done for under R100 instead of (last time I heard) R5k a shot.

Whether it is a finger prick or a shy one, I would have done what I needed to ensure a level field. Even when I was competing the number of sudden arrivals out of nowhere was interesting.

You say that.......

After 22 years of playing around in cycling we have a saying amongst the training group....

We are ****.....but at least we are consistently ****.  :P

Exactly, and as always if there isn't policing, there will be more chance takers....

Apart from the occasional anti-histamine/anti-inflammatory, I never use any meds, so they can test me as much as they like.

Also, pick your battles and do testing at the bigger races, SA's, Provincials, 947.  I was very surprised to see no testing at this years SA's & Provincials.

I'm in the 50+ group this year and although the racing is hard, it's hard to spot consistent "amazing performances".  Here and there I sometimes wonder, but then I only train ± 8 hrs a week, so I'm not on the best form anyway.

I am still relatively young (less than 40 but not by much), but I remember being tested at school in the 90's.. We won SA champs rowing at roodeplaat and were marched straight to the control centre before we had time to celebrate or get the boat off the water.

Happened again at Buffalo regatta the following year as well.

I think our rowing team was tested 3 times in a 2 year period.

Pretty hectic. We were just a bunch of kids from the Eastern Cape.

You would have had fun on the first day of National Service basic training when they did the medical tests.

You were lined up, shoulder to shoulder, given a little plastic bottle and told to wait for the command which was a simple "P!55".

Then the corporals would march up and down shouting "P!SS" into your ear until you had provided the sample. Not much dignity in it.

Ha, ha

I went for a pi55 just before our medicals.  So when the order came to produce the sample, I could not even squeeze a drop!!!

The whole peleton were already gone, so I went to the "krip" and swiped my dipstick to get a "peleton average" .  Passed the test!!!!!!

For those of us not approaching a century in age...what the heck is going on here?

As much as everyone who gets beaten by someone in a age cat or sees a age cat rider do well amongst elite kids doesn't mean they doping. Its not as big as everyone makes it out to be, yes it happens but not like its exaggerated. not any more.

I have age group athletes that train better and more consistently than many Elite riders, this alone allows them to make significant gains where a Elite kid is just hacking or its to cold, to hot, woke up late, had a fight on Tinder etc etc.

A lot of vets have been acing for MANY years and that alone especially in road counts a lot when it comes to tactics, bunch position and when to use power.

I often find successful age group riders in Business approach their training with the same focus which yields results. Often elites kids today cant ride cause its raining or they cant find their arm warmers. Or best, I never looked at my program until 2pm today and didnt see I had to do "X" and I cant do that now.

Look what age are winning the Marathons, the Stage races in MTB sans a few and then look especially in the WC who are winning road races. Im not bashing current Elite crop as many are good and focused but the majority aren't and its sad to see as they are better than their results show - yes flame away.

Doping isnt as wide spread in Vets as its made out, there are a handful yes as I said and those who know, have a good idea who they are.

Last time I saw SA Drug Free at a race was 2014... when Chad Short was the Vets 40-44 SA Champ. He wasn't racing the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic that day, when they called his race number. A few months later he was bust, but for a test at track nationals rather than road champs.

For us that's a bit on the slow/inexperienced side. I'll try to simplify.

I fudged an urine test, and passed.

Of course there are good riders in the VETs. But without regular testing, both the optimists and pessimists are just speculating and will form circumstantial arguments around their particular biased opinion.

Would be good to see Tested vs Postive ratios in Elites vs VET.

I think the results of testing would be very interesting. I can think of a certain ride starting at an Engen in Fourways that would benefit from this as well... :whistling:

You know what realllllyyyy gets me?

I don't trust the test one little bit.

Thing is.

The guys that actually do have the arrogance and balls to dope in Vets, actually knows how to do it is such a way not to get caught.

So the test....in my opinion....is just a BS story.

But that is just me.
