Managed to pull my dad to a 3:59:29, we did a proper sprint to the line, so much fun! Started in FF, wind and heat was crazy, I'm definitely not dropping back again. Suffered in my exam this morning, but seeing my dads smile as we crossed the line makes it all worth it!

Congrats to everyone breaking their previous bests! Lekker

I also noted the start pen marker boards were missing. No D group sign, just an empty frame. I saw/heard the A/B/C confusion. We just seemed to gather all together and the herd mentality took over. Can only imagine the chaos on the road further down. We were lucky with no incidents (that I saw anyways)

My results are also not up on the Racetec site. Have sent them a mail with the cxs file off my Polar. Chip was working fine. So waiting to hear back from them

They moved the signs as the bunch moved (called closer to the start line)

A group was a nightmare.

1st they mix C bunch with us as they lost the A bunch number board.

Then they lead B bunch infront of us so we all had to squeeze through them to the start.

Then of course came 3 crashes. I was in the middle of the 1st got hit by bars and bodies but didn't get 1 scratch so I was very very lucky... Had someones 2 blood spatters on my shirt though. . Never seen bikes and people fly so high in my life before...

Hope those guys are ok????

Playing catchup ended up killing me so I crawled home in a 2:49 compared to the  A winners 2:28 but hey its a sub 3 so I will take it lol...

Yea that stuff up at the start with having B go ahead of A caused problems, i went from being in front of A to one the last to go across the start line... being so far out of position meant i was putting in big efforts to get further forward then the first crash happened ahead of me and it split up and couldn't get across to the front group. so sat up and waited for the second group and then had a horrible view of the second crash...

from my vantage point that second crash looked like guys not anticipating the change in gradient as the downhill kicked up again and they rode straight into the back of each other...

i have to say i saw a lot of close calls due to guys dropping chains and coming to near stops searching for gears because they hit the base of uphills and still in big ring and small cog from the previous downhill...

Nope according to the marshal they lost board A but they were standing with board C in front of group A... eventually they realized the confusion it was creating and they took it down.

Hi all. I found this at the 3rd water point on the race today. I tried to give it to someone important but they weren't interested and then by the end of the race I had forgotten it was in my back pocket. If it is yours let me know and I'm sure we can organise its returnattachicon.gifDSC05116-min.JPG

The tandems use these Flight Decks, hope the owner is a Hubber

Hi All,

So this is my first post and it was also my first ever road race (last week was my first MTB race also).

I have to say, this is the hardest thing I have ever done... I am fairly active, I play Club Cricket, I do the odd trail and park run.... But Damn it was hard...

Because it was my first, I started in group NN which was a 09:52 start...I was aiming for a 4h30... and was looking like I will get close to it as I went past the 67km mark in 3h02m(on a mountainbike btw).. The wind and heat was immense but despite that enjoyed most of the ride up untill that 67km mark.. I cramped up so bad just before that water point.. and was managing my legs so hard to get to the finish. Having bad cramps and getting to Witkoppen, Ceder and Steyn City pushed my willpower to finish to the MAX... Finished in 5hr13 ( I had to walk alot of the last 15km because of those cramps - never cramped like that ever..) I did hydrate(i think) enough as I went through 4 bottles of water and 2 bottles of mix, stopped at all water points apart from 2. I forgot my gels, but had  3 x bananas, 1 x PVM bar, some Biltong and some Jelly babies.

I have to say, the furthest I have ever done in training was 35km road (and 37km MTB)... I now know better and will definitely try a few other races to prepare.

I did try and Slipstream and managed to do it behind a woman down past Kyalami (my Cateye clocked 70kph but its a bit out as i did 100.2km).. I also Got a good pull down past Ponte and Jan Smuts... But was passing people most of the time (and also people passing me) so did not manage to get in a group.

So how should I build up my training for next year?. I dont want to just jump into the 100km races again..

Well done on finishing

Increase the distance on your training rides, work your way up to 50km then 75km and then 100km.

Make sure you can comfortably finish a 100km training ride and you will easily crack the 4hour mark next year.

Do slow long rides on weekends, build up distance. Also do some of the 60km races throughout the year until you feel you can step up to the 100kms.

know a few Brian's that cycle.

Mind if I ask company name and his surname?

Just got news that the gentleman that passed away from a heart attack was the developer for the previous company I worked at.

He was a big cyclist and completed quite a few 94.7's previously

Do at least 2 HIIT sessions during the week- for example 10x 30sec sprints (100% effort) and the other 4x4 min intervals (90% effort).

start increase your distance over weekends- every Saturday 5 km further.

Important thing is to increase the work load/ intensity with every session and after every 2 or 3 weeks, have a week rest (1x low intensity session and 1 shorter relaxed ride)

So yesterday was our first big race on our tandem (hubby and I).

I had tons of fun. Been on a tandem draws a lot of interest from supporters and loved the idea of names on our backs so supporters kept shouting our names, etc. At the Woodmead water point I even heard them saying that I must be the happiest stoker around (I was smiling at this point).

What was to follow was brutal. Hubby got cramps on the M1 so I pushed harder and let him rest. He was then fine until Witkoppen. Leg seized and we had to get off and walk it out. Back on and then bad cramp again on Cedar. I pushed us in a low gear all the way home with hubby cruising.

Cramps were caused by strong winds and heat.

Had a great day out. Finished in 4 1/2 hours. Will be back to beat that next year.

In the news reports they specifically say his family has asked that his privacy be respected. So lets do that.

I nearly forgot my rant.

To the boxes that parked us in (Silver parking) :If I had to leave after my first lap - you would have returned to 2 completely flat tyres you Moron. Luckily I did the second lap. I hope you are still cramping and that Karma gets severe PMS.
