MTN supports a team for years, gets them off the ground, had the vision to see Dougs dream and saw it through. Got an African Team to Le Tour.

With massive goals achieved, financial support is withdrawn...... Gets called cowards!

Rather thank them for what they have done for cycling instead of moaning at them for moving on.

Holy crap people can be ungrateful!

One good thing, no more "where does coffee come from" ads ;)

meanwhile Dimension Data be like:

If Dimension Data take full sponsorship it could mean that with their new partnership with ASO that Qhubeka would be assured of entry into TDF for the next 4 years and if the other Grand tours follow suit wit the data side of things then they could get into the Giro too. So there might very well be a platinum lining to this story.

I'm happy for people to have an issue with MTN the company, MTN the network provider, who just like all their competition take every opportunity to rip the ring out of their customers, doing just enough to stop you from leaving - read the same for any bank.

BUT you can't fault MTN the cycling sponsor.

They got involved in the team in 2007 I think when Doug Ryder was still with microsoft. They dominate the local road scene for a while, dominated the local mtb scene (male and female) and even supported our olympic BMX racer Sifiso Nhlapo. The MTN took over the MTB series from Mazda(i think).

sheesh, why the tough love? If anything they're leaving the team in a damn healthy state and with very good prospects. nothing sinister

Agreed. This is a perfect moment to reflect on what MTN has done for the growth of our sport.

The sponsorship of local cycling clubs, national series, the Qhubeka charity and pro team, sponsoring the live broadcasts of world cycling races that we've been able to enjoy on Supersport where our TV coverage is now even better than what the French get (yes I know that Cecil Nurse has taken over), and and and....

In the face of unavoidable economic and budgetary constraints, MTN have had to make the decision to pull out after these years. But in this time this one company has made a massive contribution to the health of our sport and so from me to everyone at MTN:

I thought it was common knowledge a while back that MTN's contract ran out at the end of the year and they weren't planning on renewing.

whats the big hoo-haa now?

And the team has a headline sponsor lines up.

Glad to see the last few comments are more reasonable.  I think we need to be more congratulatory of MTN.  Most cycling sponsors don't stick around for more than 1 cycle.  Where is US Postal, Discovery, Rabobank (Men's), eBanesto etc.

I think MTN have serious problems.  It is hard to justify spending R70m on the cycling team when they are laying off thousands of staff members.  But on the other note they do need to keep advertising or the loss of customers will get worse.  Vodacom dominate in local sponsorship and advertising and have the juiciest sports.  MTN need to catch a wake up as even Cell C are more innovate and targeted these days.

I think this would be a perfect opportunity for Investec.  They are an international company and the massive TV exposure would be good.  They already sponsor cricket in UK and Super Rugby.  Plus cycling has been identified as a sport for the affluent, so that would fit their customer profile.  Investec-Qhubeka, sounds okay to me.

That MTN logo was starting to look a little 'dated'  ;)

Question is, will the new sponsor also sponsor the development team?

Could an admin not fix this thread title please... it doesn't sit well with me.

I know it was the news24 headline, but well, it's news24

Send Popit a pm, coming from the East Rond myself.... I know he is a very reasonable chap

edit: correct spelling
