No Epic anymore bud? or is the Epic still on too?

No I cut my losses on Friday, went on these Classifieds in 3mins, paid and subbed... Insane the demand for Epic entries.

Only really entered Epic cos I thought it may take me a year or 2 to get running again properly. But things have progressed better than expected and a sub7 comrades is more NB to me than suffering around another EPIC. and my partner was swerving a little too. aaaaaand I'm not getting any younger.

And an Oceans silver has always been on my bucket list and was 1 week after Epic.

So a Double silver 2018 is the plan... watch this space... looking to get my A seeding out of the way next Sunday.

Yep I'm IN

And CT marathon next weekend, who is joining me in CT?

Would have loved to go to CT for the CT marathon. Just too expensive to go down twice a year for OMTOM and the CT Marathon. Will be watching it on TV, seeing that it is an IAAF gold label status marathon.

Also doing CT Marathon, will have been on a 3 week taper, trying to get rid of an ITB.... so at least I will be fresh... will save PB's for another time!

maybe a little off-topic, but after 10+ years of social running i had a bit of a eureka moment last week...

I recently bought a garmin fenix watch with a foot pod, tri HR belt etc.  For the first time I had the ability to check the "running dynamics", i.e. cadence, ground contact time, vertical oscillation etc.

Issue is that I scored poor on all of them despite recently running some of my best times in many years.  So, giving in to the pressure of technology I started with the obvious metric which is to up the cadence.  I used to run comfortably at around 160, however Garmin suggested I up the cadence to 180.  I found myself a few songs where the beat matches this pace and just ran to the music..  At first my HR went through the roof and for a brief moment I thought this high cadence ideal was all bogus, but after the initial two minutes my HR started to stabilize and then dropped down to the normal levels that I was used to.

At my normal training pace I typically fatigue at ~8km, yet this time I was still going strong after 10km and ended a 12km run, clocking 4min20 for the last km!!

So bottom line, if you're running at low cadence or not measuring it, 175+ strides per minute will change your life!

Not off-topic at all.  The only off-topic chat here is cycling stuff..

This is a concept I cannot grasp and or figure out myself.  Taking a run this week, my wife's cadence was ave-180, max-190 where mine was 160 and 170.

Now I am 1.9 and she is 1.65.  I have tried my best to make my strides quicker and shorter (1.04m where hers on this run was 0.94), but I cannot get that cadence up.

Problem with quicker is, my wife is not going to keep up, we run together.  So what else should I do?   Shorter and quicker strides than I am able to put out is not going to be comfortable, so what am I missing?

I would really like to get this right if it is something that I am doing wrong, perhaps even contributing to itb for example...

I was fortunate and naturally seems to have started running with high-ish cadence when I started. Maybe something to do with the cycling, don't know.

Ferret, will be with you at the event (Cape Town marathon), but not joining you! You'll be back home by the time I slog my sorry butt over the finish line. Enjoy!

Think we discussed this a while ago

But the Long and short of it , excuse the pun, is Both

The aim is to increase the stride length and the RPM (steps per minute).

Thus you will be going further per step and doing more steps per minute thus covering ground a lot faster..  ie running faster.

However going out and actively trying to increase both can be unnatural and cause issues with your gait so needs to be worked on slowly.

Track Training intervals is a good place to try and work on this. Its flat so downhill will not influence the stride length and its short periods at a time that wont hurt the gait.

And 11 to CT....

How's the ITB ScottC-M?

Shhhh.......... I'm touching wood and holding thumbs as at the moment it seems to be on the way up.

Decided i have already entered so will take it as it comes, either to Soweto or do a shorter distance and then help out at the club gazebo .

PS Good luck to all at CT

So after our daughter was born my running took a backseat to allow my wife to start training again.

To get some structured training she followed the marathon training plan on garmin connect. She mainly ran on the treadmill (up to 2 hours at a time) as it's difficult to be away from the little one for extended periods as she feeds when she wants too(the cot thingy was always next to the treadmill)

This past Sunday was the masters marathon, and to say that I'm super duper proud is an understatement.

144 days after giving birth my superwoman ran a PB marathon of 3h55

the next day she entered for comrades (her second one), so I'll see some of you on 10 June 2018. I'll be the crazy screaming oke with a baby on the back somewhere at the 50km mark and again at the finish.

ps If anyone has a HR based training plan with some structured workouts for comrades I'd really appreciate a copy.
