Hacc Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I was on a very strict diet a couple of years ago. It forced me into the habit of eating regular small meals.I think my problem is eating so late at night. I only run at 7, finish at 8, which means eating at 8:30 - 9, going to bed at 10 - 10:30.
b-rad Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Just got back from Europe last night... so a little race report.. LONDON MARTAHON 2017 Almost exactly 6 months after a broken femur and against better judgment ... I headed to London on the 20th April with the family, still undecided whether id run or not. I hadn't really run at all for 6 weeks (after the plates came out) and done less than 150kms for the year so far, but I had done a Little 20km jog with the wife the Sunday before to see if I could jog round with no real pain or discomfort. Id also been riding the bike for a few weeks so knew my fitness/strength was ok/ and from memory wasn't too afraid of 42kms.. I finally decided the day before it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'd jog with the wife.. the worst that could happen is I'd have to catch a tube home at some point if my leg really wasn't happy. What a race... Vibe is absolutely insane, people 10 deep both sides for 41.7kms.. (one bridge you go under that gives you peace for about 500m @ 25kms) As the wife hadn't done much training either we decided to Jog the first 10kms then do a Run/Walk/Photo's/Beer stops for the next 32kms.. for a 5/ 5.5hr finish But the crowds are so large we just got pushed along from our seeded start with the flow and before we knew it we were at halfway just under 2hrs.. crowds are so big and soo close you just cant walk with all the support. After 30kms we had a Long stop with some family spectating on the route, then took more of a chill (and a lot of photos and videos) and I finally got a Pint from a SA Spectator on route at 22miles (35kms)... Budweiser but beggars cant be choosers... I wont lie and say 42kms didn't feel like a Bloody long way , and I had to drag the wife through the last 7kms But what a Party of a race... We finally finished in 4h19 which in the scheme of things was pretty damn ok.. leg held up nicely... calves and Hamstrings buggered... .Great race report! Where did you get the South African running vests from? I'm doing Chicago marathon this year and looking for South African clothing to run in Ferret69 and ScottCM 2
Tubehunter Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Andrew Steer on this thread has some South Africa flag kit if I remember correctly from the OMTOM expo.... Andrew Steer 1
Ferret69 Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Great race report! Where did you get the South African running vests from? I'm doing Chicago marathon this year and looking for South African clothing to run in Thanks We Got it from the Tour Organizers we booked through, but it has a SA clothing company details on the Label and I had looked at their site at one point and it is stock clothing.. for the life of me cant think of it now.. Will have a look tonight and let you know

I usually take off 3-4 days before an ultra.. Andrew Steer 1

I usually take off 3-4 days before an ultra..i did before my qualifier and 2 oceans....did it help? i dont know...but i ran marathon PB for mt qualifier...so I am sticking with it its more about 30 min..than distance
Andrew Steer Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 So Andrew Steer and I completed our own marathons on Monday night in a time of just 16 hours. Bumped into each other queueing to get our kids into school. So far I think that was my highest quality prep for Comrades. Also got tons of Comrades tips from Andrew, who eventually probably pretended to be asleep to stop me asking questions. I was keen to do the RAC 60km like many of you but in the end opted for the Born2Run 40km. I don't know why, I just had a bad gut feel about the 60. Maybe it was just an easy out but I think I was actually partly worried that if it all went too well I'd end up having already "run my Comrades". I'm not sure if that makes sense. Quick question, when do the rest of you intend to start your tapers? Two or three weeks out? And how much do you intend to reduce your mileage by?Small world when you end up sitting on a pavement overnight outside a school next to a member of the Hubsa Comrades group... was good chatting. Don't take my advice too seriously, I've made every mistake in the book... I might still be making a few Also seems I ran a fair bit of RAC with Hacc as Strava has us running together. We definitely need to do a coffee before Comrades to put faces to names. As for the long run advice, I only did 42km's of the RAC on Sunday for the exact same reason, going deep anytime near Comrades is advised against by many. Two Oceans is apparently great timing for a last big run, so I've gone with that... could of done the 60 at RAC, felt good on the day, but sticking with my plan. Fresh legs and replenishing my Vasbyt for the big day. 30km this weekend with a couple midweek runs, 20km the weekends after that and probably just 15 the weekend before. Nothing for 3/4 days before Comrades. Bruce Fordyce reckons you shouldn't even go walk around the expo the day before. So I'll be plonking my bum on a chair in a coffee bar the day before and resting up good and proper. Hacc, Lexx and Barry Stuart 3
Messier87 Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I've never done it before, but is there a benefit of a leg-loosner (4-5km) the day before a marathon or ultra?Don't know about running, but I used to do a small leg loosener with cycling and thought it worked well. Otherwise, my legs feel dead and heavy on the day. To me it made sense, but it is only to get the blood flowing. Very light and short (15 min max) with one or two short moderate bursts once warmed up. Nothing that taps energy to speak of.

Hacc Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 We always go for a 4 km jog the day before Comrades. It is a club tradition. It is a slow jog, everybody together. We go to the expo on the Friday. After the Saturday morning jog we don't do anything, a couple of club members will drink like students on spring break... I stay away from alcohol for at least a week before Comrades Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk Lexx 1
Lexx Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Day before the Comrades I have the best excuse to do absolutely nothing. Just relax in front of the tv and order wifey and Son around. This will also be the only time I get to do that lol. shaper, Andrew Steer, CobusV and 1 other 4

Jackes Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I stay away from alcohol for at least a week before Comrades WRT your diet question, how is your alcohol usage the rest of the time, is this not the problem? I also don't see a problem with the late meal if it is the right portion and clean. You have to eat after your main run anyways.

You have to eat after your main run anyways.During our main running season from September to May we have a non-official "no alcohol during the week" rule in the house. But alcohol is not the reason for me being overweight - it is because I keep on buying pies and chocolates from the restaurant at work. Whenever I feel the need to take a break, I find myself walking to the restaurant to burn some cash. Lexx 1
Khronis Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 While flipping through the channels I came across the Manchester Marathon highlights. They show an interview with Steve Way(British 100km Record holder) who says his been struggling with a cold the last 10 days so will take it easy. He still finishes in 02h37 even after stopping for a interview midway through the race. Hacc 1
