Jackes Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 So whilst we are on the shoes and socks subject, how are these Versus socks? I just love my little bit thicker Falke arch support socks, but they seem to be discontinued. https://www.versussocks.co.za/product-category/running/
Fruity Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 For the Altra fans, the Escalante, Lone Peak and Superior have just arrived at the Randburg Runner in Linden. Those Superiors look damn racy for shorter trails! I'd be interested to try those Escalantes for road. Screenshot 2019-02-13 at 12.24.57.pngWhat do you think of the New Balance Fresh Foam Hierro V4, for trail, Barry?I've got a pair of Adidas Terrex, but thinking of upgrading to the New Balance when the time comes.

I'm currently using Falke trail running socks for both road and trail running, even though they're quite comfortable.

SeaBee Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 I also like Versus socks. All my long runs are in them - or my I b**bies socks Lexx 1
SwissVan Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 Sportsmans do not seem to stock Altra wha... but do they finish? I ran 5 and 10km distances barefoot a few years back in PE. It was fun, but sore and lots of sidestepping debris. I didn't know about Vibram or Merrel's equivalent back then, could less so even afford them. I like the appeal of near barefoot running but with protection from debris, even if I look like "that guy". Its just a huge price to pay in taking a chance Talking about that guy.... There is a guy at my wife’s work who wears vibrams to work every day all day, even when he wears a suit and attends meetings. Apparently he has a whole range of them in different colours. Dirkitech 1

Dave would be the best person to ask I think. Fruity 1

Terrex for whats its worth ranks really well fyi. That's the site that helped me choose my road running shoes, really really good website , and I can see myself purchasing a pair of the next line of Pegasus. I see the Hierro V4 also has quite a good score on runrepeat, but was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with New Balance trail shoes.
Andrew Steer Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 Have a play on runrepeat.com, its a cool site with some helpful bit and pieces on it. Terrex for whats its worth ranks really well fyi.Only thing to be careful with, a lot of the reviews can be from Europe/US/Canada etc which is sometimes very different to our running conditions when it comes to trail... So shoes that are great in the mud over there, might suck for most conditions this side. That's why getting local advice from someone like Dave etc is always a winner. But yeah, all the info is on there if you look for it, it's a great and thorough sight with endless input to sift through - just need to watch out for things won't translate to real value here in SA
dave303e Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 I will be honest, I judge people in Barefoot Shoes- Big time- What next? not vaccinating your kids because 600 years ago we didn't? Go look at the 2018 Western States survey results and you will not see Vivo shoes even mentioned in the shoe stats, they are below brands like north face and La Sportiva which you will actually battle to even find here in SA unless you know where to look.Anyone if barefoot shoes who runs with me at any stage has to have thick skin, actually running with me you better have thick skin or be able to stop listening but ya anyway. RE- New Balance trail shoes- I have no input really as I haven't picked a pair up and looked at them or tried them on so my guess is as god as yours. Chances are if they fit your foot shape and stride well, match your preferred drop and have grip to match your typical conditions then you will probably enjoy them, NB does make good shoes. They look pretty solid in terms of padding so might be good training or long run shoes and I likely go find a pair in next few weeks to have a poke at and try on. Even with the above comment on tread to match conditions- I broke my trail 10km pb last week in a pair of supposedly heavy road shoes that were on their literal last run, in the mud after a rainstorm. So grip you can actually survive without. I think it is typical of us that have some time to spare to think of these things and overthink them. We have time to delve into the tiniest of details- I am super guilty of this -I caught myself weighing different brands of aaa batteries to find the lightest ahead of the Lady Grey Parkrun this weekend. Fact of the matter is that I have run it 5 times in 3 different brands of shoe with 5 different headlamps and really fitness decides 99% of the result at the end of the day and those 3 factors are 3 of about 30 factors sharing that last 1%. Bit like the 26/27,5/29er debate- pick your poison and defend at all costs. Chris_, Fruity, Odinson and 1 other 4

Was there tar roads littered with glass 600 years ago just like there weren't more aggressively mutated strains of diseases like today? Was there an understanding of running, shoes and movement science as there was of the vast array of diseases and stuff that vaccines could cure? X Doubt. Also difficult to gauge where your motivation lies, whether you're discussing performance based on shoe types or brand names.Heck, even I will look at my feet in disgust if I wore Vibrams or whatever (what Vivo's are you talking about?), but if the barefoot/minimalist shoes makes runs more fun or helps with strengthening feet or reducing persistent aches, then good thing they exist! Some things change, some stay the same, but resisting technology because someone refuses to understand it... well, let the donkey die if it wont drink. Regarding your last sentence, if no one attacked others based on their choice and just let people enjoy things, the world would be a much nicer place. Let me enjoy ugly shoes please. Except crocs, sis. Pieter-za 1

Regarding your last sentence, if no one attacked others based on their choice and just let people enjoy things, the world would be a much nicer place. Let me enjoy ugly shoes please. Except crocs, sis. There has been a strong move away from the pure minimalist/barefoot style shoe in the last few years. Brands seemed to have acknowledged that it didn't work as well as anticipated. We also don't live like we did 600 years ago, once we get past being a toddler we generally in ill fitting, poorly designed shoes. (school shoes etc) We lose that inherent strength, gait and foot strike. A large number of the brands that went that way have changed to a more cushioned shoe again but have retained the low drop. A large number of athletes/runners got injuries from them and it had repercussions. https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a20783252/vibram-settles-class-action-lawsuit/ At the end of the day you need to make your own decision on a shoe. (I have a pair of those pink Reacts) Ugly or not, they need to work for you. Very few people have the body strength and foot strike to really pull barefoot running, it takes years to get it. As an aside, I know a fishing guide that hasn't worn shoes at all for years. He guides all day, and not on a boat and goes anywhere and is just as fast as anybody. Rocks/thorns/glass/metal no problem. If they work for you, go ahead. If they don't, use something else. Dirkitech, Lexx, Stretch and 3 others 6
