Saw this mole snake trying to cross the road by Big Bay on Monday. I stopped and herded it back up the revetment into the bushes or else it was going to become road kill.

I must admit I got a proper fright when I first saw it lying in the cycle path directly ahead of me.

After I stopped and took a better look I saw it was only a mole snake and not a cobra. Around here they look very similar at first glance. This one was quite a beautiful specimen with some copper tones that shimmered as it moves.

Apparently they have a vicious bite, but other than that, harmless.  Wish there was more people like you that can appreciate these beautiful specimens.

Snakes serve a purpose and they need to be conserved as well.

On the side of the Rooiels road going towards Kogel Bay, I was out the saddle grinding and only saw it when i almost rode over it 😱. It didnt move, i however did. Pretty sharpishly 🤣

Looks like it is digesting it's last meal judging by the bulge in the lower part of the body. Still potently dangerous though.

Would be good to get it sort of out of the road, but that is very dangerous.  Maybe someone know a snake handler in the area?

Actually saw the same snake yesterday on the Rooiels road (and someone taking a picture so it might have been you 🤣) - it looked a bit dead to me but it might have just been lying very still, wasn't inclined to take a closer look.

Prolly was me 😉. When i rode past it the first time it was lying in a different position so ja i dont know if it was dead or not. Given how close i passed it the first time i consider myself a lucky escapee.

PS: i was in my Munga SPCA kit, on my roadbike though.

If only someone can get it away from the road before a car flatten it ... 😐

Glad it wasn't dead or that I didn't poke it to find out... - was quite an impressive specimen..

Think it was someone else we saw taking the photo, so probably a few versions floating around on social media now 😀

Ja it seems there were more curious people about. For me the best snake is the one thats nowhere in my vicinity! 🤣
