Opinions welcome. Just a thought.

Hey, so you're welcome to tell me to piss off, but just a quick punt.

As mentioned in one of the other threads, something I'm kick starting this year is a cycle touring business venture with a friend, that is a specialist in corporate travel.

We're currently putting together a package for Austria.

If you would require someone to organize and do the admin for this kind of thing, from travel, Accomodation, insurance etc you know where to get hold of me.

Tx

I would never tell you where to get off, ever!

More casual from my side, meet people, go for a ride, sleep over and then some more time on the bike.

Don't think it would ever need such organization as things are better if kept simple?

I find organized tours here very expensive indeed and they do not seem to cater for the different needs of the individual.  I could be wrong but in my case I prefer just to ride without over planning.

Your plans need a huge amount of admin etc and I wish you all the best.

But thanks anyway.

I'd love to do something like this!! Maybe start at karkloof country club or Howick and ride in land towards the notties himeville berg100 route!

Why not ride to Karkloof/ Howick - that's half the fun. I did exactly this not so long ago. Spent a night out there and then back home via a different route. Busy putting something similar together hopefully at the end of the month with an extra day/ distance via Notties area.

Will be riding from PMB to Cape Town at Xmas in 2 years time - have two volunteers who will be joining me.. Will be heading to Notties Himeville over the hill into Lesotho and out the other side. We will be prebooking some BnB's, but also have some family enroute.

Would love to do it sooner, but its my 50th present to myself and we only do KZN every other Xmas..

Sepia - half the fun is getting the maps out and checking up the options via the interwebs - the excitement builds until you leave and then the freedom sets in.

Seems you are well on your your way - look forward to the trip report.

Just do it now.

Clearly all these little excursions will be held across SA

We could maybe coordinate the different groups from here on when and where...

Personally, i was planning on having a little trip again in Feb(from Pretoria)

Have problems reading maps and even bigger issues with the GPS,  Old school.  New technology absolutely slays me.  It does not help if I went to a bum school...............educational status lacking big time.

Sepia, I've been wanting to do exactly the same thing for a while now. It's difficult though with work and family commitments, but I guess one will never do anything if you use that as an excuse. One ride I've always wanted to do is a 2-3 day trip through Lesotho. Roads are much quieter, in fact if you search hard enough I'm sure you'll find backroads with NO cars.

Or something like the freedom challenge route, but at your own leisurely pace.

You'll still need permission to ride the FC route. There's a lot of private land involved and a lot of people need to notified of your intentions to cross their land. It can be done but must be done through the right channels but there are fees involved and communication required.

Alternatively do the actual Ride to Rhodes (mildly supported, slightly easier) or the Race to Rhodes (unsupported, all out fun!).

Unless you know the areas well, you are going to come short if you have problems reading a map or operating a GPS. Old school would be the ability to use maps and have no need for GPS. Sure, these trips offer a great amount of freedom but there is a certain amount of planning that needs to go into them so make it a pleasant experience otherwise they can become nasty, quickly.

My advice would be to plan properly, know your route or at least the areas you wish to traverse, get good efficient (not necessarily expensive or even bought - one can DIY a lot) equipment and then get out there and enjoy.
