I Will agree with a lot of the suggestions here that 30-06 and 308 is both really good all round calibres. If I had to have only one rifle it would definitely be one of those two. Here is my three rifle's. A Steyr 270 with 22" barrel, vir die vlaktes. A Sauer 30-06 full stock with 19" barrel, vir die bos. A Brno 22LR with a Sus-Tac silencer, its "Silent But Violent".

i was waiting for someone to ask me that.

I have a small farm which i visit on weekends. the gun will have 2 functions.

1. obviously self defence. i will only carry the gun at the farm. i have no intention of carrying it in town. a lot of research tells me the 40 is more accurate over longer distances and also makes a bigger hole.

2. i spend a lot of time walking in the bush and sometimes happen upon the odd bushpig, bushbuck, jackal or honey badger. Should one of these take a dislike to me being near them i would prefer something a bit bigger than a 9mm to stop them. its not always convenient to carry a rifle in the thick bush.

3. i like it more :)

I've shot a .40 for 19 years, and it's a really great caliber. Offers a good balance of carrying capacity, penetration and stopping power.

i def will in time. Its a bit of a capital outlay now though.

I went down this road and it became a deep, dark money pit very quickly.

Finding 2nd hand equipment on guntree really helps.

I suppose a .40  will work on a bushpig, bushbuck or jackal, but ask guys of my generation and they will tell you that nothing short of a ZU-23 will stop a Ratel.

Only thing that can stop a Ratel, some of the time, is another Ratel.

A mate worked in the field in Namibia. He didn't like carrying a rifle all day on his shoulder, so he opted to carry a 44. magnum on his hip as a backup. Given that he is 6.6 and weighs about a 110kg most animals keep their distance.

For home defence, he uses a .32 ACP so his wife can shoot if needed.

unfortunately i can only get 1 firearm so it needs to be a compromise between the 2. i am sure my wife will have no problem with the .40
