So after I was chastised this passed weekend for lubing my chain too often, I lube before every ride immaterial how far my last ride on that bike was and more especially after a wash, and told that one application of lube (Smoove in this case) should last 300k's I wondered am I doing it wrong, am I the only one?

50 K's in the rain will clean your chain. Guess what I'm saying is it depends on the conditions as well as the lube.

I find that the trick with lube is to wipe the excess off after application. I only use a wet lube and re lube after about 10 hours if the riding was dry.

I wash my bike after every ride with Dirt Nurse solvent, and this really cleans the chain, sprockets, jockey wheels and chain wheels very well, leaving the drive train quite dry, with only a minimum of oiliness that can be felt on the chain. I lube the chain after my bike has dried, and repeat after the next ride. I agree with the sentiments above, you cannot lube too often! Chain lube is a lot cheaper than drive train parts :)

I pretty much lube (also with Smoove) after every ride. If I didn't wash my bike I will wipe the chain clean with an old rag before applying the lube. The cost to replace a chain/cassette/chainring far exceeds the added cost of applying lube more frequently.

As it stands now, I have very close to 3000km on my X1 Cassette and chainring. And I have only replaced my chain once in that time. I have only experienced 2 chain drops in this time period (prior to replacing the chain about 800km ago) and have had no other unpleasantness at all (despite riding my bike like I stole it). As far as i'm concerned it pays to lubricate as often as possible.

Currently using Motorex wet and dry lube (No not together...) Wet if the conditions are wet and dry if they are dry (The wet lube tin is a LOT fuller than the dry lube tin   ). Chain gets a squirt before every ride.

Before that I used Squirt. No issues there either. Same routine. Used to carry it with me on wet races though and lube at the water tables.

I too like Rock Guy wash my bike pretty much after every ride and lube (also with smoove)

I am not a fan of riding my bike with mud/grit/dirt in the cassette or chain. Hope it pays off LOL

Lubing your chain a lot is fine, as long as you're cleaning it and wiping off the excess.  Adding lube onto old lube that's gone black and grimy is just going to compound the issue, and in that case too much lube is a bad thing.  It then goes everywhere and attracts and holds drit, grinding away at your drivetrain even if it sounds quiet.

Get yourself a chain cleaner, some degreaser and a few rags and then you'll be sorted.

I use Rock and Roll lube.

Chain wash, dry and lube after every ride. I also lube before each ride and I wipe off the excess lube. I am a bit OCD that way, prevention is better than cure though...

I lube often:

Road bike, wipe clean after every ride using damp micro-fibre cloth, thorough clean of all drive train parts and re-lube. Drive Train around 14000 km and all still in spec!

MTB: Wash after every ride (with very few exceptions) thorough clean of all drive train parts and re-lube

I use Clean Ride (White lightning) lube almost exclusively. I was given a bottle of Smoove but have not tried it yet.
