[Event] 947 Cycle Challenge 2016

I think that depends on whether you want an official result or not. If you simply just wear their number and ride as if you are them, then you should have their start time. Though technically this is probably not allowed, I don't see how they would stop you.

They cant stop you, but... I wouldn't advise this - in the event of an emergency, the race number is used to identify the person, as well as the their personal details (emergency contact details and allergies to name a few).

Last thing you would want is to be admitted to a hospital and given some meds that you're allergic to, i.e. penicillin, or worse - have the next of kin contacted and it's not yours. Like I say, this is worst case - but could happen.

If anyone says it won't happen to me, you need to come spend a race weekend with me and see what happens when it does happen.

Let's not beat about the bush....it's not allowed and is specifically prohibited in the terms and conditions when you enter legitimately. From memory, I think there's a ban, for a period, from future races for those caught riding under someone else's name (this ban may apply to both parties?).

One may argue that it's difficult to police such activity, and I'd agree with you, but the right thing to do is follow the substitution process....

Seems that the previously "unofficial" pre-94.7 warm-up ride, which was originally arranged via Twitter (along with other rides around the world done the same way) has now become an "official" unofficial ride open to cycle challenge riders only and you are being told to register here:

https://events.primedia.co.za/index.php/eventSite/twitter-ride-2016-2016-11-19

"Register with us, so we know who is joining us – no cost, just good governance".

Not really what the "Twitter Rides" were supposed to be all about, but I'm sure they have their reasons . . . .?

If I remember correctly, one of the first Twitter rides was arranged via Twitter by our old friend Lance Armstrong whilst he was visiting the UK. Possibly London? Riders met in a park somewhere for an unofficial "local ride".

Some newbie advice please. This is my first 947 and my first cycle race of any kind. I'm starting in DD charity batch. The start sounds super confusing would someone mind explaining how it works please? I realize there are multiple batches of course but how everyone gets to the start in their group is a mystery to me.

Thanks!

Number collection done inside of 20 minutes, but I may have to go back

  • The Team Vitality free shirt giveaway to the first 200 members didn't happen - they never had their stock there this morning;
  • I needed to buy a few goodies but I left my wallet at the office (perhaps not a bad thing).

Very few bike manufacturers displaying their product (or perhaps I wasn't focused on looking for that), but lots of clothing, supplements, accessories and the usual small stands.

The scanning of the barcode on the phone worked like it's supposed to - wonder what will happen when it gets busier?

Donation to Team NSPCA imminent, but they are over the moon with the funds raised - official photo with the cheque handover will be done on Sunday at the hospitality area.

Make you way to the D circle on Sunday morning. You then proceed like sheep/cattle through the fencing into the start batches passing the number and timing chip check points.

Your race number will have either red and black numbers printed on a white background. From circle 6 - 9 both sides of the road are used, with Red numbers on the  one side and black on the other side.

From there, you just need to find your group DD - but... there are only a certain number of batches. You have to wait for batch DD to show up on the boards and then move forward to the start ever 3 - 5 minutes (depending on the interval between each group).

There are plenty marshals there to help, so just ask them - they'll be able to assist.

Hi

So this year we will be trying something new

At circle 7 we will have a large electronic sign indicating the groups that are currently loading and the groups that will load next.

You can wait in the area between circle 6 and 7 and watch the signs. Please don't try go ahead of your group as you just clog the area for the groups ahead.

In and out in 10mins (racing categories queue) ... bought 3 tjoops for 100ZAR at Cajees and a pump for 70

Didn't park in the 20 bucks spot just went passed to the open parking nearer the entrance to Northgate, just a short walk to the registration.

Sounds confusing but it's not. Everyone will be walking with their bikes in the same general direction - so follow them. There will be signs posted high up indicating the batches and as mentioned above, there's a big holding area before hand :-)

Just don't be late. If you are in a rush everything can go wrong.

I recall someone posting that the you need to have your CC race number to join the Twitter ride, however it looks like entry to the Twitter ride is closed....

Registration only opened at 8:30 today, Twitter ride entry closed when I checked at 10:30.......

I posted this.

Not sure what they can do to stop people joining en-route though? You just won't actually finish inside the Dome.

ICE bracelets, cause Im a problem solver......

The person that passed away two weeks ago had an ice-bracelet on his bike. It was fine for the team attending to him at the site of the incident, but they aren't the ones that have to contact the next of kin/ICE contact. That is handled by the JOC/VOC and race director, who aren't at the scene, so they rely on the single item that identifies a person - the RACE NUMBER - with all the details linked to this number.

In this sad case, it gets handed over to the SAPS - who also don't care about the bike but rather the personal details that aren't necessarily on an ICE bracelet.

I'd say the bracelet is cool to have when training, and it can speak for you, if you ever find yourself unable to speak (unconscious).
