So what are you training for?

My aim is to ride up everything a trail could possibly throw at me.

I also enjoy technical riding, up, down, across...does not matter.

Not training for anything, as I enter event when and as I see fit.

And like Hayley stated, sanity.

I have increased my training load to no only a Saturday and Sunday with the odd week ride either to work or after work, but it inlcudes some power training, which is not enjoyable, but the benefits outweigh the ickyness of going nowhere at a fair speed.

Most people in my circles don't get it. My answer to the idiotic questions is a question. What did you do this morning? We went shopping, We watched the rugby, We slept late etc are met with rolling eyes. I train/ride because I love that flat euphoric feeling after a big morning. Knowing I've been out there. This morning i saw what people can't really relate to.

I would also be more productive if I could only sleep on thursdays.

sadly, the older I get.. the more dependent on sleep I get.

I commute daily and ride for fun on the weekends.

The problem is that since I started commuting I found more-and-more excuses to NOT ride on weekends.

To counter this I entered a couple of stage races such as the Cradle Trophy, Sani, etc to motivate myself to spend quality time in the saddle on weekends (I’m eyeing the Dr Evil later this year)

Since I have a clear goal to work towards I look forward to the longer weekend rides and push myself further every time I cycle

I have been asked this question SOOOO many times, especially in the last little while.

Like last Saturday I stopped at the Lion and Rhino park on the Cradle to fill up my water bottles and started talking to 2 other ladies that just arrived after a run and they asked my how far am I riding today so I said "just 100km today". I obviously said "just" because for most of the previous weekends I was doing 165km+ rides and they asked me "so what are you training for?".............I said "just for fitness and sanity"

Some mornings I walk up the stairs at work a bit difficult due to tired legs and people at work will ask me what's up so I will say "legs are a bit tired from MTB ride yesterday afternoon and a road ride this morning" and it will be followed with a "so what are you training for?"

I obviously always say "nothing, just ride for fun and sanity".

I need cycling (exercise) in my life, 2 days without any and I can feel myself get depressed and slide into this 'bitchy' attitude towards most people.

Then on another topic (but similar line)....

I have met a few riders the last little while (actually my one sibling included) that has coaches, training plans and special diets worked out for them...but they are not getting results. Like I will invite them to a ride and the reply will be "sorry I can not, I need to do 3 hours today at 'this' pace" (slower than what my lazy rides are). I then go ride with them on another occasion and it leaves me thinking "why do you have a coach? What are they actually doing?"

So how many people actually still just ride for fun?

Or is all your riding actually training?

And what is your end goal?

Fyn brag!!

There are mornings where I wake up feeling horrible (mostly due to sinus) and I just don't feel like riding and then later in the day when I feel better, I kick myself.

What I do is enter fun races like Berg and Bush etc where the distance is out of my comfort zone.  Then when I wake up on a Saturday feeling horrible, I still go ride because I "have" to train.

What normally happens is that 15 minutes into the ride I get the blood flowing and start feeling better and really enjoy myself.  So for me having a goal is just a little bit extra motivation to go.

Vitality Rewards is really working for me.  This morning if I didn't need points I would have gone straight to work and worked an extra hour (loads of pressure).  Instead I went for a run in the rain.  It was AWESOME and I am now in a really good mood.

Occasionally I'll do rides that are more specific to the training I need, but I won't turn down a group ride (even if the pace will be slow) as I really enjoy riding with others and not worrying about how fast / far I am going.

I ride for fun these days. Done enough events in last 5 years and spent enough money on them too. Now I just enjoy a ride (or 5!), being outside and exploring my area without having to worry about how many K's I have done or what my average time is etc etc.

The best are the clever chirps like:

"you just cycled 100km?, you should have phoned me, I would have given you a lift"

OR

"don't you have your drivers licence?"

Funnily enough, they always seem to come from the "horizontally challenged" people...

I do most of my training in the morning on my way to work, I commute/train. So everyone see's me arrive and leave on my bike. So I get those same really intelligent comments. Then the one day you decide not to be it because I need to go somewhere after work requiring my car or the weather is lousy and I just don't feel like doing 2 hours in the rain before work or what ever my valid reason is, and those same clever people will then ask if your scared of this weather or are you getting lazy.
