if you want decent protection I would stay away from the Chinese Cairbulls in the above link...

interested why you say that, just going on price or seen in the flesh? almost bought a set of four for a team to be matching.

I have bought lights and otherparts from them and quality has decent.

Don’t cut corners with a purchase of a brain bucket! Spend extra and get the latest protection. Would you buy a sub standard tires?

With the acknowledgement that more $$$ doesn't automatically mean better safety in a helmet.

IF anyone comes across any road bike helmets on special please post link here.

Budget is zero, but I'll go up to around R1500 for a helmet that offers decent

Northcliff Cycles have had Lazer helmets on sale for as long as I can remember ... perhaps they still do. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t skimp on headwater although I will buy good quality second hand and only if it has 5 stars..

*head water but also head wear if you wish🤦‍♂️🤣

yes, every helmet that I'm checking out is being cross referenced with this site.

the helmet I was wearing is not listed on this site, that does not mean it was crap, it just means it was not tested.

judging by the occasional discomfort I feel, I hit my head HARD, that helmet did its job. But I'd feel alot more comfortable if the new helmet has been tested and proven to have a safer rating.

Absolutely.! I don’t think any helmet is “crap” rather have than don’t..

I prefer to know for sure though..

Or check the specified safety standard perhaps.

We found no correlation between price and protection, with the highest-performing helmet being one of the less expensive, retailing at around £50.

Almost every helmet produced will meet CE standards. I mean it’s basically like a PPE hard hat standard.

The Virginia Tech stuff is great as it tests multiple directions and types of impacts across multiple sports. And just like the reference above, the safest helmets may be $50-$80 where helmets we pay R25k for here in SA score much lower (here I am speaking about 🐎 helmets - the most expensive - and fashionable - one in SA, scores basically zero, and we can’t buy the safe $50 one locally because it’s ugly and no-one stocks it 😂

Glad to hear the horsie folk are even more ridiculous than the cycling folk when it comes to bollocks image.

Those white jodhpurs are not from Maxed Elite at the mall.

Check check.

Note the rating of the Samshield Shadow Matt out off the 49 helmets tested, then see the local price (cheapest is around 7k, then it goes up according to bling finish to around 17k - helmet structure is the same). VT places it 26th in the list.

And then see the rating of the $58 helmet, which we can’t get locally. Placed 6th.

Bling factor value is a powerful thing. I mean I love a bit of cool brand or fancy, but not at the expense of an organ that controls my entire existence. I’d rather be unfashionable with all my faculties.
