RIP: The ability to overtake on an MTB

I always thought roadies were the evil and moody cyclists? Mountain bikers are supposed to be the friendly ones.

PAH!!!

From this very Hub, we can deduce something completely different.

Honesty Box debacle at Hoogekraal, rouge rider Tygerberg hassle, MTBers at SBR.....

Roadies never carry cash... Always a card. So Honesty Boxes can defeat them. Just saying...

"Track please Oom" bugger, I hate that sound!

Happened to me on lap 3 in my only XCO race, my age and speed got decimated by a laaitjie. Never done a XCO race since. But like I said before, kudos to the seuntjie, respects his elders

I cant hear "track", or the buzzz of some overpriced pieces of aluminium, not the "clikety click" as you engage the eagle gear when I am listening to the latest episode of my doef-doef music podcast blaring in my earphones - both of them, very loudly

1.) People who don't like being overtaken and try to block you or swear at you when you overtake them? So wind your neck in. No need to swear at the guy cause he is faster than you.

2.) People who are faster than me and want to get in front of me on single track, who on a leisurely ride out at Northern Farm or the Spruit, think that screaming "Track " will clear the path. Sorry bud I can't see you and I am not going off line until its safe and in any case if you are so fast and expert then work out where you can overtake.

Am the only one who found these two points freaking hilarious?

Just read and laugh. [emoji23]

I am old enough to have had a young Burry overtake me at a XCO race.

I didn't even know he was coming up behind me. He went around me without any fuss. All I hear was "Dankie Oom."

In my other experiences of been lapped is that the good ones pass without any fuss and then still thank you. It's the 2nd tier that are desperately trying to hang on that are the "track" screamers"

Hehehe! This happened to me at the Delta Dash.

The Affies cycling team was doing two laps for every one of mine.

Imagine hearing "Passing right. If we can. Thank you" Twelve times during an event.

Damn those kids are fast (And friendly).

Heres the thing. I have done a bit of racing in my time - cars, bikes etc.

You worked out pretty quickly that at the sharp end of the field all the guys could hit an apex and were pretty fast and the piece of track you wanted was normally occupied by someone as good as you. So to get around him you had to be creative. And sometime that meant using pieces of track that weren't considered track - kerbs etc.

Its not like you were doing something that others couldn't.

You learned to be able to race off line and change your lines mid corner or pressure a guy in to a mistake.

That sir is racing.

Even buzzing hubs does the same - pressure and knowledge - its an accepted technique. Just like saying - I will be overtaking you next corner on your RHS sir so expect me to be there. Works a charm.

So dont think i am trying to be a knob and blocking or insisting i get track.

But you dont win races by sitting line astern in a race.

And you have to be able to overtake to win. Its a skill - maybe you should try and learn it.

BTW - hit plenty warthog holes and had Flying W's and through thorn bushes in my time trying to get a piece of track from a guy - and i take full credit for my actions and have also recovered from a big hole and pedalled in to the distance. Warthog holes are not as scary as you think

Depends what kind of racing you doing......xc and 4x sure block the bastard all you want and be a creative bastard all you want....marathon races/weekend rides....be polite and agree on when to overtake......downhill/enduro..... get the f#@k out the way of the faster person

Thats me ....use it abuse it or lose it

Yip because you might pass them on the downhill, but in a marathon there is more than likely an uphill soon after, and they will catch you again....

Is that not what Pepper Spray is for? If they don't get out of your way when you SCREAM "STRAAAAAAAAAA F-Ing VAAAAAAA" then you give them a quick spray in the face when you do pass them to educate them on etiquette.

How do you even argue with that without dropping IQ?  :whistling:

I've solved this whole problem by sleeping in and hitting the trails after lunch. Most of the time I can do a 2 hour ride without seeing another person.

Morning people...

Ya, "single" track means exactly that. "Single" file whether you are Aaron Gwin or just pushing your bike.  MTB is not meant to be fun. Its never a race and you must obey the rules of the road, just like a taxi. Nuff said, live with it.

Not really. Everyone seems to expect me to move out the way on an uphill ST but no one seems to want do do it on the downhill. So I will also force my way past where and when I can if I want to enjoy the ST.

I have these days got to the point where I WILL not give track on an uphill as I am tired of going off line only to be stuck behind those that just passed me when the going goes downwards.

So If I have to work to get around someone others can work to get around me. This is going to start causing lots of aggro out there one of these days as I am not the only one feeling this way.

The sooner we get back to giving way at all times the betting things will become.
