Magnet-less Garmin spd and cadence sensors

Just want to know how the folks are experiencing the 'new' magnetless spd and cadence sensors?

I've had 2 spd/cadence magnet ones replaced under warranty and both didn't last much longer. I hope these new ones are longer lasting?

Any (re)views? besides DC Rainmaker etc, looking more for a long term review , cos most of these reviews are done out of the box and everything tends to work well when new

I've got the sensors with my new edge 520.

So far am happy with them, not having the magnets is really nice, also takes away the fine tuning and sensor going into spokes problem.

Only thing that I might see as a down side, is the mounting of the speed sensor onto the hub, it uses a rubber band type system. (similar to the cheaper blinker lights)

if that rubber snaps you potentially have a lost sensor, on the other hand it is out of the way so risk is as low as possible is guess.

Data from sensors seems to be quite consistent, haven't noticed any jumping of cadence or speed values.

Have only had the unit for 2 weeks, so no long term review yet I'm afraid.

I assume it uses an accelerometer chip so It should be very reliable with no moving parts.

If your old magnetic ones used reed switches (which I'm sure they do because you can hear them switch) the new sensors will be much more reliable.

I've been using them for a while too with my Garmin 520. Think i must have covered about 4000km between my road and mtb bike. What i did is after installation i ran 2 thin cable ties over them incase the rubber/silicone elastics break. no problems at all with pick up since day 1. hope it stays that way.

Good that you brought this up as I'm also having issues with the GSC 10 sensor for the second time. Will be taking it in tomorrow,  but need something more reliable as I am using both speed / cadence for indoor training with my fluid 2 and TrainerRoad.

Will be following, Tks.

thanks, I just hate it when my spd sensor gave up during a ride, since it is paired with my 500 it takes precedence over GPS so the unit think you not moving. Crap if you doing a race.

I see it is R1800, so wanna make sure it is worth the whilst.

Glad to hear so far it is an improved unit(s)

The speed one on the hub spoils the bling of the hub. I use GPS for speed.

I use the Wahoo cadence version as it has ANT+ and BLE so I can use it across more devices. It saves the hassle of selecting different bikes on the Edge500.

Wahoo Speed sensor is half the price. You can get the magnetless Cadence and Speed bundle for under R1500.

I only use the cadence sensor on my 520. The GPS speed is very accurate. When i got it i compared it with my old computer to see and it was very close.

If you really keen, pop me a pm with an offer, i dont use my speed sensor, thats if i can find it.

I have one of these, very stable so far, prob around 1000km.

If you have one of the newer Garmin's, that have BTLE, and you just need cadence then have a look at the Wahoo RPM Cadence pod, it's a little cadence sensor that transfers data via ANT+ and BTLE, can go onto crank, but also on a shoe, making it easy to use on multiple bikes.

if you want Cadence and Speed, then ye the new Garmin sensor is great, only negative is it is only ANT+ where as the Wahoo Speed/Cadence is both Speed and Cadence. Very similar price.

Anybody having a problem with erratic speed readings with the new speed sensor?

I bought mine around November last year (with an EDGE 520), did about 4 600 km so far without a problem.  Then, since Friday the readings are all over the place.  After a lot of searching I found a discussion on Garmin forums and it seems as if it is a common problem.  Since the speed (and cadence) sensor works by "measuring" the sensor's position vs the earth's magnetic field, any magnetic interference will affect the sensor.

I recently installed a SRM and was on a Computrainer on Friday.  Long story short:  seems as if my drivetrain is now magnetised which confuses the speed sensor (cadence still OK).  When I hold the back wheel still and spin the cranks backwards, the sensor picks up a reading as the drivetrain moves past.

Probably the best solution would be to put it on the front wheel away from teh drivetrain (I will test this on Saturday), but since I do most of my weekday training on the IDT, the front wheel mounting will not work during the week...

Anybody having a similar experience?  Any other suggestions?  (I am thinking of getting the older GSC-10 which should work despite the magnetised drivetrain...)
