Andymann Posted August 25, 2021 Share Couple of years ago we got an old 50's Motorcycle Helmet donated to our Velocette Motorcycle Club. The plan is to turn it into a Trophy (similar to the picture below) and award it every year at our annual gathering. None of the Trophy shops I have spoken to are prepared to do it, and just suggest I try and get hold of a carpenter. Is there anyone who would like to make a bit of spare cash and do something a little different? It won't be difficult - a square base with a rectangular block (to be able to add plaques) with a circle on top to mount the Helmet. It just needs to be tastefully done out of decent wood. Any takers - Gauteng based if possible!

EDIT: Quick picture compilation of random images below to illustrate what I mean. Edited August 25, 2021 by Hairy carrera4s and Andymann

patches Posted August 26, 2021 Share Yesterday I was pottering in the garage wondering how to better organize myself and in turn reignited my deal for some sort of mobile workshop/bench. I went and re-watched a bunch of the YouTube vids I had previously drawn inspiration from, and stumbled on a new one... this... More pics here: https://woodwerks-usa.com/products/mobile-werkshop-plans-milwaukee-woodpeckers-armor-tool This guy has gone next level! I'd hate to think what the cost of all that was, especially as he is a hobbyist. So with a far lower budget and limited access to half of the cool things available in the US, I have installed Autodesk Inventor Pro and will commence the design on my take of this, suited to my tools, needs, material availability, and budget. It's been about 6 years since I used Inventor in anger, so some dusting off of the old skills will be part of the process Edited August 26, 2021 by patches carrera4s and The Ouzo

Steven Knoetze (sk27) Posted August 27, 2021 Share I think, personally, that the extensive use of the extrusions like that is a way of cheating, or dumbing down the skills needed to do it properly. It is the same as saying digital art is on the same level as an artist who literally puts oil to a canvas. It is not the same. stefmeister

I fine piece of cabinetry, where the drawers and joints are all dove-tailed. One has been done meticulously by the carpenter using a saw and chisel, the other done using a perspex template and router. The outcome is the same, and at times the price, but was the same "artistry" involved??

As soon as something is trending with one tuber, the rest follow suit. The quality of the content goes down as all of them just do what generates the most views. I'm sure we all have that one friend (often more than one) that kinda knows enough to be dangerous and has never been wiling to invest in their own tools because they rely on the fact you have the tools they need and they'll just bum them off you. I have this fairly frequently and for the most part I have mitigated this by saying "come over to my house and we'll work on it together" or "the local Men's Shed has way better tools for the job and the membership is reasonable" (45 NZD/year). But lately the challenge is that this particular individual is wanting to lend tools relating to an onsite build, so both the above solutions are invalid. My concerns are 3 fold: injury to person due to inexperience on using dangerous specialised tools damage/loss of tools and cost to replace (tools requested total approx R20,000 in replacement value) inconvenience of not having tools available should I need them The guy is a long term mate and doesn't want to intentionally cause me grief. I'm just conscious that I am becoming the local tool-library and the above-mentioned concerns grow each time. Interested to hear your stances on things like this?! I still look for a chain whip that never found it's way home. Then I got in a pinch and needed it urgently, ended up making a DIY version with a plank and old chain. What I am saying is ..... good luck. Could you wing it and say your insurance only covers usage at your home and not when the tools are off site? Rich Stan Posted August 31, 2021 Share Random one guys, my old man past away a few years ago and in the process of packing up his workshop. He used to make wooden toys, and there still a good few bags of part he imported from the states (pegs, wheels, people etc) that I am looking to sell. Any recommendations on where to even start? Try a local market, there is one in Pretoria and an old man makes wooden toys. He might be interested. Perhaps you should post a few pics, someone here may take them to tinker with. I might even......
Rich Stan Posted August 31, 2021 Share Great, thanks for the advice Steven. What is the name of the market in Pretoria you referring to so I can check it out? Attached are some images of what I have if anyone is interested?
