I was told by a coach that she has been losing weight on her E Bike as she sits in her fat burn zone most of the time coaching, so E bike i think has a place for the overweight person but diet  is all so impotent.

I think that myth has been disproved.

You 'burn more fat' when exercising at a higher intensity.

My good friend suffered a severe leg fracture last year and decided that now is a good time for an E-Bike.

He got himself a lekker Levo.

He has now gained 10kg.

How is that for a different perspective?

PS - My feelings are neutral towards ebikes.

so what you're saying is that he would have gained 20-30kgs if he hadn't got the ebike?

yes that's exactly it - she is able to ride more.

So on Sunday i experienced my 1st ever encounter with an E-Bike at Modders. Saw the guy getting ready in parking area and headed off about 10 min before him. On the first long climb up next to the fence he came past, my brain starting hating him and i sooooo wanted to chirp him. But he did politely thank me for the gap (I heard him coming up behind me).

But then i looked at the rider - He was a huge oke, probably 140 kg a massive upper body, basically a heart attack waiting to happen, he was riding with a mate who was a slim guy on a normal MTB. It became clear that he was or had decided to do something about his weight and health and if it were not for E-Bike he'd be sitting at home getting fatter, while his mate was out riding.

Kind of puts a different perspective of the debate - E-bikes do belong on trails and in races if it gets these guys out on bikes improving their weight and health issues.

Agreed with your post until the last sentence - if they want to race, let people organise e-bike races.

Quite a number of races both MTB and Road have separate  ebike categories and even separate races, Swartberg 100 who have the E-Fondo which is only open for E Bikes.

Would I buy one ? Well after recently trying out one at my LBS, probably if a decent one was not so ^%$%^% expensive but I would not "race" in open categories or races, but kudu's to orgs for starting to recognize and cater for them.

Cannot decide whether this was an error or a stroke of genius!

Both the 947 and Ride for Sight allowed eBikes but with conditions. Your time could not be used for seeding, you could not race for any category and you had to start in assigned groups (RFS it was the last starting group).

So organisers are testing this and trying to see how they could be included.

Just to clarify.

Are you blaming the Levo for your friend gaining 10kg?

Would he not have gained any weight if he had a conventional bike?

Maybe he gained weight because he wasn't exercising!

Not sure what your perspective is???

Good lord, there's gonna be hell to pay if he appears on the T'berg trails with that thing, not to mention the extra airline baggage costs.....

TBH not sure I get an e-bike 'race'. Yes you get to ride in places you will normally not be allowed. But what is the competitive angle? Battery life? The way they work are so different I don't think there is level playing field.
